Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

I recently decided I wanted to rewatch this series and just got the DVD in the mail. It's just as good as I remember it.

For those who don't know, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is a cult British horror show filmed in the 80s. Unfortunately, it never aired due to it's radically uncoventional storytelling and envelope-pushing deep psychological horror. The studio execs at the time simply thought it was too risky to present to the public. However, times change and six episodes were finally released on Channel 4 in 2004. Though the effects and production-values are a bit dated compared to modern TV, both the writing and the acting still retain their ability to shock and fascinate.

Anyone else a fan of this show? I strongly recommend any horror fans give it a watch.

Indeed! Garth Merenghi is a true auteur, and it's a travesty that his talent was not more widely recognised. The cast of this series is particularly talented also.

Favourite line = "In the background, there was a pigeon". A genius moment of sinister scene-setting.

One of these underappreciated shows that were way ahead of their time. A pity only those six episodes were ever released to the public, and now the network apparently allows for them to be viewed on Youtube. Mr. Marenghi can't be making a lot of money off of that, just another example of the industry exploiting truly talented people.

The best thing about this show is the way it embraces multiple genres and captures the full range of human emotion. Marenghi could terrify, yes, but he was also the master of sensual and erotic prose:

"He glided in liquid smooth."

"Her whispy mound."

"Her honeyed lining."

"Her mossy cleft."

Such descriptions perfectly encapsualte our most primal and fundamental state.
