New George R. R. Martin short story!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but it seemed the best one, since it's not to do with ASoIaF but still GRRM and SF/F related. Feel free to move it if you like.

Anyway, to seperate this from clickbait spam, my name is Jeremy Szal, and I'm the assistant editor of Hugo award winning podcast StarShipSofa (proof here). Anyway, our latest episode contains a podcast narration of George R. R. Martin short story "The Men of Greywater Station". It has NEVER appeared online in any form, and it's been out of print since the 70s. This is the one and only place you can find the story. And yes, it's free to listen.

Before any of you ask, yes, GRRM himself gave us the green light to adapt his work, and even offered to send over a print copy by snail-mail to me. But either way, the episode is now online, so if you're looking for a George R. R. Martin story that you almost certainly haven't read/listened to before...now you have one! :)

You can listen to the episode or download it here. (It's only available on iTunes and other audio formats)

I hope you enjoy it...and I hope this isn't considered spam.

Enjoy!

- Jeremy Szal

This is great news, Jeremy and Starshipsofa is an excellent podcast! But the mods are sure to move this to the literature section...

Thank you so very much!

And I don't mind. I know I'm barging in like this, and so if the mods did move it to it's proper place, I wouldn't object. ;)

I was quite excited by this at first. It is a bogus statement to declare something a new story when it is well over thirty years old.

Maybe so, but it's new in the sense that it hasn't been seen for over 35 years in any shape or form. Everyone's forgotten about it.

Could you tell me that you'd heard of the story before this point?

It sounds like something to check out in that format for sure. As far as the story it has been released fairly recently in "Dreamsongs" the full George Martin shorter length stories compilation and before that in G.R.R.M. a RRRRetrospective Collection.

No. No it hasn't.

Me and GRRM exchanged at least 8 emails. He told me that no eletronic copy of the story (or the collection it was published in in the 70s) exists. He even offered to post it to me by snail-mail, since that's the only place that the story exists.

As for the antholgies, look at the ToCs. The story isn't there.

Not to come off as abrasive (I know I am), but I think GRRM himself would know better than anyone else where his work exists.

You and George are quite right, it's never been published online before. Great reading of it, too.

Would love to hear a podcast of Howard's The Ugly Chickens, if that ever becomes a possibility. Hilarious.

To be fair, you CAN buy the story used on Amazon. So when you say "this is the one and only place you can find the story", that's not exactly accurate. :P

You can't just get our hopes up with that thread title and then smash our excitement to little bitty pieces!

Dreamsongs is far from a complete collection of GRRM's short stories, there's only so much you can put in a single volume and as Jeremy says this one isn't included. I have read it before (I've got a second-hand copy of Songs of Stars and Shadows), and although it's a decent story I wouldn't say it's among George's best so I think its omission from his best-of compilation seems reasonable.

I wonder if they're ever going to do a 'sequel' to Dreamsongs including stories like this? I think there's definitely enough that's currently out of print to fill a second collection even if the first Dreamsongs had most of his 'big' stories in.

I think it's good to have it more easily available, although I agree describing it as a new story is maybe hyping it up a bit.

Indeed. And thank you very much! Mr. Nick Camm is an actor himself, and he's actually sharing a film with Iain Glen (Ser Jorah Mormont), so that's ultra cool!

And about Howard's story, I'll see what I can do about that. I'm always interested in resurrecting older stories, or at least stories that have only appeared in print!

Well, I did say "online" and eletronically. Obviously it exists on paper, we needed to get it somehow!

Besides, the collection is out of print, so unless you have a second-hand version like you do, or somehow manage to find it in the bowels of an old bookshop, then you won't be reading it any time soon!

It's extremely rare either way. Most people don't know it exists, let alone have read it!

Your post did inspire me to buy Dreamsongs and reread, as my copies have been "borrowed". I'll have to listen to The Men of Greywater Station, too--I've never read it.

That's good to know. ;)

And yes, do give it a listen! And let me know what you think.

We've got a massive archive of stories here, so see if there's any other authors/stories, you know.
