What character would be the best politician in the real world?

I consider the term "politician" a pejorative, so probably somebody like Littlefinger. Statesman is an entirely different matter. Ned and Davos would be excellent statesmen.

I think I'd go with the High Sparrow. I think he has shown the most ability to gather popular support.

In most democracies, talking about your religion and playing the pious card tends to lose votes rather than gain them.

And it would be even worse in one of the exceptional cases like Iraq or America, because, while he's certainly god-fearing, it's the wrong god.

Danaery's, she even knows the term.

/End show snarking

Littlefinger is clever enough for real world politics, and I think Tywin and Jon Arryn would likely have fared well. Ned would have made a fool of himself, Jaime would have killed everyone he didn't like, and Tyrion would have kissed far too much ass to be taken seriously.

I was assuming the characters would, rather than being magically transported from Westeros, simply be born in our world. So, depending on his background the HS might be Christian or Muslim or maybe even atheist.

Doran, Littlefinger, or Renly.

Doran is mild mannered enough not to piss off too many people, has just progressive enough policies that he would keep a decent amount of popular support, and has the sympathy factor lol

Littlefinger because he is politically brilliant.

Renly because he could get a lot of popular support, although it is very difficult to say whether he would be able to earn the support/respect of his peers in government.

OK, as a Christian or Muslim, he might win in Mississippi or Iraq. But even then, he might still have a problem. If you look at the people elected to represent fundamentalist communities, it's not usually the ones who best live the life they preach; rather, it's the ones who shout about their faith as loudly as possible and divert attention from their own hypocrisies by finding others to throw stones at. That doesn't seem like his style.

Because the ones who live the lives they preach would never want to enter the political arena.

Too many sins required to be competitive.

Good point.

Also, this reminds me of something Billy Graham said in the mid-2000s when asked what he thought of Falwell converting to premillennial dispensationalism: That means the religious right is now deliberately fighting against what they think is God's will, so "any sincere believer has to pray that these people are not sincere".

Littlefinger would do well. If he lived in a heavily religious area, he would pretend to be of the most popular zealous religion, soak people of their money and institute policies to defund public education, start a bogus war to line pockets, make deals with corporations, especially media outlets, and choose some scapegoats to direct hate. Actually, I suppose he would have a front guy and do it all behind the scenes, like, for example, Karl Rove.
