Seaworth'sShipmate
Is anyone here the owner or know someone who owns an "exotic pet"? I am thinking of purchasing one: whether a sugar glider, a ferret, a macaw, or perhaps even a monkey. I would want a chimp if they were not so unpredictable and expensive. Any experience? Elder Sister
I have a gorkie. They are super rare, and hard to manage, but totally worth it. They're not very expensive, but they do tend to cause a lot of damage, so you need to factor that in before you decide to go ahead and get one. And finding a breeder is really hard. Because they're a cross between a goat and a yorkshire terrier, you shouldn't have issues with diet, and they're not picky eaters. They are extremely territorial, and demand tons of attention. Kelli Fury
I think it's a very bad idea to get any kind of pet without researching it first. Just wanting an exotic pet because its exotic seems ill considered. Each species has very different needs and temperaments. Even a dog or a cat is not necessarily a good pet choice for every person. So, you have to look at your lifestyle, and look at the needs of an animal you're considering, and see if you can provide everything it needs and still live your own life how you want to. A chimpanzee, for example, should probably just not be a pet at all, for anyone. One person could not provide the social structure and habitat to satisfy the needs of a chimpanzee. It shouldn't just be about what would be "cool" for you or whether you could technically keep it alive. It should be whether you can have a mutually rewarding experience
brook
Most Australian natives make terrible pets. Gliders are noisy, nocturnal and high maintenance.
Theda Baratheon
I hate the idea of people wanting to stamp ownership over every single cool/cute looking animal they see. Watch a video of an ''exotic'' animal and you will see a hundred ''OMG I WANT ONE!!!'' comments. It makes me sick. These animals do not belong as our pets for our own amusement. How on earth is the average person fit to properly care for a monkey, for example???? Human beings relationship to animals in every way just makes me very, very sad. Buckwheat
What Kay Fury said. OP, educate yourself a lot before choosing a pet, and think through very thoroughly if you are able to take care of an animal, especially a very demanding one (in terms of time, special food, cleaning, space, whatever). SkynJay
Gliders have been covered so I will skip.Ferrets are like a kitten that never grows up yet are usually kept in a cage. They are incredibly social and require a ton of interaction. Those sold in the pet trade are quite often Marshall Farms babies and are inbred to hell;almost a third get a tumor on their adrenal gland.Getting a parrot is like getting a kid. They live forever, are very emotional, and form bonds that are for life. When separated from people they are close too, or even when they just are not getting the attention, they can do major self harm. I have cared for a bird that plucked every single feather it could reach.Considering a chimp is just about the height of stupidity. If you want an exotic pet just to be exotic get a ball python. They don't grow big enough to be dangerous, require only a heat source and a spot to cool down in its home, and have no need for attention. Ill considered perhaps, but aren't they like "gentle giants" that don't go after people they care about? Id imagine having one could well protect your home from robbers

You'd be cruel to purchase a chimp as it'd likely been stolen away from its home just sop an idiot like you could feel special by owning an exotic pet. Could you look after it, could you give it the life it was naturally supposed to lead before it was taken from its home???
Jaxom 1974
Most Australian natives make terrible pets. Not to mention the whole, "You can't keep me! This is slavery!". Stick to pets like dogs and cats. Ones that don't speak human languages.

I don't think most people really want a sloth or a lion cub or an otter or a red panda or something. They probably just would like to snuggle their little faces off because they are adorable. Talleyrand
Most Australian natives make terrible pets. Is that why my great uncle has a few unkind words to say about them? I have a wild Haggis. It's cute as fuck. The uneven leg length makes walks a bit difficult though

A True Kaniggit
A let a little sister live with me for a couple months once. It was expensive as hell and constantly begged for food.
Stannis Eats No Peaches
Id imagine having one could well protect your home from robbersIs that why you would want one? Get a Rottweiler and train it to bark a lot.ETA: as for exotic, my family had pet rats when I was younger. They were essentially large hamsters that liked to climb stuff. Still amuses me to casually drop that into conversations sometimes.
Astromech
My aunt raised two orphaned raccoons. Neat little guys but can be troublesome as all hell. Shenanigans! I wouldn't recommend it unless, as in my aunt's case, you're basically fostering them until they're mature enough to strike out on there own. The same opinion I have of children, come to think of it.
