Which seasons to watch after reading each book?

After watching season 5 of GoT, I started reading Book 1, and now am about to finish.

At first I was going to read the five books, then watch the five seasons "as a re-watch". But then I thought I don't want to keep reaching the end of the story, and then going back to the beginning.

So, I though I would arrange reading the books and watching the season like so:

  1. Book 1
  2. Season 1
  3. Book 2
  4. Season 2
  5. Book 3 (Up to Davos V)
  6. Season 3
  7. Book 3
  8. Season 4
  9. Book 4
  10. Book 5
  11. Season 5

What do you think? I need your opinion as people who read the books and watched the series..

They line up just about perfectly. Although, there are some scences from book 3 in season 2 and some of book 4 in season 4 (etc.), but you cannot really get around that. So, I would just read them as planned.

Personally I Liked reading the series before watching Got... but it was also interesting to see the story played out on television. The first seasons script is almost word for word, then they screwed up seasons 3-5, royally. You should do whatever you think is best.

If I would give any advice on this, it would be to watch all, then read all; preferably with about a year in between these two actions. Looking at them side by side will make you hate the show. Just hate it.

The books were always my favourite, but I wouldn't say I hate the show. It is still better than a lot on television shows out there. How I see it is that Got is on interpretation on ASoIaF. I do not know why they decided to stray from the books so much, but it is just their take on the series. I am sure in 70 years, multiple movies and television shows will have tried to remake ASoIaF.

I always tell people "I am A Song of Ice and Fire fan, but Game of Thrones if okay too. Just know there is a difference (and ASoIaF is better [in my opinion])".

I wouldn't bother really, Game of Thrones is its own entity now, it's not really Asoiaf anymore it's just D&D's story dressed up as Martins. Just re watch seasons 1-5 if you wan't a recap. The books are a lot more dense and complex so you should really read them as their own entity not as a recap...

Until season 5 the show did a pretty decent job in portraying the books in my opinion.

I would just read all the way through.

Seasons 1 and 2 are pretty much on point with the books.

It gets bad in season 3. Season 4, even worse.

Season 5 is absolutely off the rails garbage.
