what is going on with Ned's bones?

IIRC Ned's bones were on the wayback to Winterfell in the company of Hallis Mollen. And than there's nothing else. Is it possible the bones are with Holand Reed? Maybe even on the God's Eye? Could they be animated by the magic of Greenmen or the Others?

Eddard’s bones have travelled from KL to Riverrun. One of Cat’s fears is whether Eddard’s bones made it through Moat Cailin before the Ironborn take it (which they do in ACOK). That implies to me that Hallis Mollen and company are going to use the Kings Road to transport Eddard’s bones back to WF.

I place an assumption that Reed and his men are aware that Eddard’s bones are traveling north and they know ways through the swamp so that is not a problem, but Theon takes WF.

Then the Theon Reek/Ramsey thing happens. The false death of Bran & Rickon. Bran & company hide in the crypts. Ramsey overtakes Theon. Ramsey burns WF. Ramsey and Theon/Reek return to Dreadfort.

Bran & company break out of the crypts by Hodor knocking the door partially of the hinges.

Turning to ADWD, two books later, when Dustin requests Theon/Reek take her to the Stark crypts the door has been repaired. Closed tight.

I say Eddard now rests or unrests in his tomb.

And that during the Theon/Reek and Jeyne escape confusion Mance has made his way there to hide out until… boom doom boom doom.

Hal is something of a moron, maybe they're in Sunspear. :dunno:

Nah, he accidentally went to Starfall instead, and then tripped and dropped them off the top of the tallest tower, so Ned and Ashara now rest together. :)

Anyway, more seriously:

  • Is it possible the bones are with Holand Reed? Yes. I don't see any other way for Hal to get past Moat Cailin than with the crannogmen's help. Beyond that, we don't really have much idea of what happened, so they could easily be with Howland.
  • Maybe even on the God's Eye? That seems like a stretch. Howland would have to turn around and go back the opposite direction, through the middle of the worst part of a war zone, undetected by either the Lannister forces or the BwB. And meanwhile, the only real evidence we have for it is that the Laughing Tree story implies that Howland went there once, before the tournament.
  • Could they be animated by the magic of Greenmen? Even if you assume that Howland took the bones to the Isle, we don't have any evidence that the Green Men have any such power. All we know about them is that they're an order of men created to defend the weirwood forest on behalf of the Children, and that they have some kind of wisdom that Addam Velaryon sought, and that Howland (probably) went to visit them before the tourney at Harrenhal. We haven't even heard rumors of the Children reanimating anyone, and there doesn't seem to be any tradition of the Old Gods getting involved in reanimation. And whatever Ser Addam and Howland were looking for there didn't appear to involve reanimation. So why should we expect that they could do so, even if they had any reason to want to?
  • ... or the Others? They're half a continent away, so the rest of your theory makes it far less likely that Ned could be wighted, nor more likely.

He isn't really stupid, he is just known for stating things that are obvious. That doesn't make him a moron, it's just very annoying. Cat actually agrees that he would make a good captain of the guards.

He probably didn't get past Moat Cailin before the Ironborn took it, so he couldn't get past it and just stayed at Greywater Watch.

Well if Cat says he'd be a good captan of the guards, that means he'll be terrible.

Yeah, stating the obvious usually indicates a lack of intellect.

I have never met an intelligent person who does so, and many of the morons in this world seem to love to, as if they're contributing something useful.

No offense meant to morons, of course.

Barbrey Dustin intercepted the bones on their way north, reanimated them, and now has skeleton-Ned serve as her pack mule in the stables.

I like your theory but it actually contradicts Barbreys own words.

I think Hallis Mollen is with Galbart Glover, Maege Mormont and Howland Reed at Greywater.

Thing is, Reed knows the swamps. It is his domain. Reed & his people seem to do a good job of containing the Ironborn that are left behind to defend Moat Catilin. Ramsey has Theon/Reek bring the rag tag Ironborn to heel so Roose can ride up the Kings Road, and pass through MC with no problem.

When Bran and company leave the crypts Hodor knocks the door partially off the hinge. Ramsey is not in WF. He is trying to clear the way for pappa to return north. Barrowtown fits in there somewhere. Roose decides that WF is where the wedding is to take place.

Then the Boltons return to WF. The snows come. Infighting begins. Dustin wants Theon to show her where the entrance is. It has been repaired and hidden under snow fall.

Is it difficult to believe that the reason the Roose & company were not treated with the same crannogmen tactics at MC that the IB had experienced is because that Reed knew the way through the swamps and could deliver Eddard's bones to WF before the Bolton's arrived at WF.

Perhaps the squaters at WF repaired the crypt door?
