Who created The Wall and why.

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this has been discussed at length, but hey why not again.

Common Westerosi lore states that Bran the Builder built the wall after the Long Night. This lore also states that BTB lived for several hundred years and built basically every cool thing in The North.

The lore has most likely been embellished to create legends associated with house Stark. There are very little of what could be called "facts" in this lore.

The only fact that can be corroborated by multiple sources is that there was indeed a "long night" where an "invading" force came into Westeros. Everything else can be seen as self serving propaganda from Azor Ahai to BTB.

I just feel from a logical perspective, who is most likely to have built a giant magical wall of ice? Maybe the magic wielding ice monsters.

So why would the Others build the Wall? I don't have much except that humans are dicks. Just ask the Children of the Forest.

I also don't see GRR making such one dimensional villains. Possibly the Others are the Freys of the The Land Of Always Winter and feel dishonored by a broken marriage pact. The pact being between the Nights King and the Other female he "found" in the forest.

Anyways, we will know for sure next season of Dnd's GOT when Lord Coldemort reaches the Wall and brings it down with a word.

I've heard the theory that the CoTF, giants, First Men and the Others came to an accord at the end of the Long Night, ceding part of the North to the Others and all of them working together to build the Wall to mark the border. The theory went that the Others are causing mischief because the wildlings being on their side of the Wall breaks the peace treaty. The problem with this theory is why the Others invaded in the first place and why they waited around 8000 years to enforce the treaty and drive the wildlings from their lands.

But given that the Wall is made of ice, has magic woven into it and GRRM said the Others can do magical, wondrous things with ice that nobody else can, there is some possibility that the Others had a hand in making it.

That is the sticking point isn't it. Why come now.

Also if the reason for the Others current destructive campaign is some broken pact from 8000 years ago, that doesn't really make them nuanced in anyway. They would still be monsters.

I really just want there to be more to The Others than a destructive force of nature.

That would make them like the Freys cept the freys are less petty and were more justified

All of the old races are dying out. Their fight is against extinction, as Mance and the wildlings were becoming increasingly more numerous and organized. Just look at what's happening to the COTF and the giants. It's also why they have never once marched in force, instead using the cold and wights.

Hmm, interesting theory. I really would like to see more of a background to the Others, because like many of you I don't see them as just villains trying to take over the whole land. Or would it just be the North? Maybe it's just me but I can't see an Other in King's Landing...too warm? Lol

I had not really considered this angle. It fits cannon as well as theme. We never actually see more than a few Others at a time. I would not be surprised if there were only a few hundred or so left in the world.

Just now thinking of how the Others "reproduce". We do have evidence that they take Craster's sons. And if you want to get crazy and mix show cannon with book cannon(I know, dangerous bordering on unethical) it is highly implied in the show that these sons become Others.

Maybe part of the "pact" that was broken would have helped the Others overcome a problem in birthing? This is all part of my desire for the Others to be more than just a destructive force of nature. But most likely they are just the opposite side of the R'hllor/Dragon coin.

Ha! I imagine even if the Others did take Kings Landing, Varys would survive and somehow make himself indispensable them.

My real question about the others is if they are in fact one of the elder races or men subverted into them through magic. I won't cite anything from the show but there are points in the books that make me question it. For example the children and Giants look and are built vastly different from humans while the others are distinctly humanoid. Also there is no mention of them before the coming of the first men. They use weapons that were also introduced by men, as the children used spears and bows and the Giants used crude mauls. Tactics seems to be employed by them as well and while we haven't seen firsthand how the children wage war, judging by how it went with the first men and andals, they're probably not good at it.

Pretty sure it was Brandon Trump Stark

To keep out immigrants

So you're saying the Others are Mexicans?

Or I guess since it's the north, damn, polite Canadians?

I eagerly await the Other leader with his toque, calling y'all hosers, eh.

I like the fact that they are a force of nature it makes them scarier you can't reason with them you can't align them to your house with a promise of marriage or lands or titles they can and will kill you and wipe out your house or the known world and the fact that you can't reason with them is the reason I love them so much although the show has shown them to bit more nuanced when they showed the one walker bring the baby and when he places the baby down you see a blurry image of of all of them wearing black in a line and one,The Night's King, begins to walk and at Hardhome you see the 4 walkers on horses staying back as if they were commanders and they were wearing armor so it seems like they aren't just killing machines but actually have an order and a society and can think rationally which makes them all the more terrifying
