to steel Posted July 5, 2015 Share Posted July 5, 2015 We know Ayra is described being very ugly in the books, ned use to sympathetically say she was pretty just so could feel better for a bit.. but reality was always harsh for her, since jeyne use to remind her of something she lacked compared to her sister, who she was jealous of because of Sansa's looks and grace which Arya doesn't have “Hodor!” Sansa yelled. “You ought to marry Hodor, you’re just like him, stupid and hairy and ugly!” ''Jeyne used to call her Arya Horseface, and neigh whenever she came near.'' ''She had never cared if she was pretty, even when she was stupid Arya Stark. Only her father had ever called her that. Him, and Jon Snow, sometimes. Her mother used to say she could be pretty if she would just wash and brush her hair and take more care with her dress, the way her sister did. To her sister and sister’s friends and all the rest, she had just been Arya Horseface.'' Don't understand why she holds it against her sister for being pretty, Arya was always harsh on Sansa, Sansa always felt rejected by her.. so instead she should be getting as much sympathy as Arya, it's not her fault for being pretty and drawing every man's eyes.. The Tullys look normal. Arya has the Stark look. Primitive, and long of face. She will always be just a little bit ugly but the skill to be able to wear faces will help her. Ned wasn't lying to make her feel better, arya is the spitting image of lyanna.Don't understand why she holds it against her sister for being pretty, Arya was always harsh on Sansa, Sansa always felt rejected by her.. so instead she should be getting as much sympathy as Arya, it's not her fault for being pretty and drawing every man's eyes.. Then comes a second daughter, who might steal her place as Sansa's friend, because she's higher born, higher of status, is expected to marry a lord or a knight regardless of her looks, etc. So, she tries to bully and scare away Arya from Sansa by calling her names. Nobody else but Jeyne (and Sansa) call her horseface. Nobody else calls her ugly. And yeah, if your sister and her friend you hope to be accepted by and play with call you ugly that is a big deal for a 9-10 year old. Even professional models struggle with considering themselves as "pretty" until they're often well into their 20s. And you expect a child that was bullied by her sister's best friend, and her sister joining in to get over it quicker than basically the majority of women overall (who weren't all bullied)? Jeyne and Sansa just enjoy taunting Arya, their opinion is meaningless. Catelyn likely said as much to encourage Arya to care for her appearance. In any case, how many nine year olds have grown into their features? Many, many, children become attractive only when they hit a certain age. Your repeating the opinions of biased people from the text including Arya. The people in Braavos are probably the first unbiased opinions she's ever gotten about her actual looks.
