Salagia369
Does anyone think that perhaps Eddard building a sept in winter fell could have something to do with the return of the others and or the fall of the Starks. Perhaps part of the pact the Last Hero ( Bran the Builder) made with the children had a clause about keeping the new gods out of winter fell. AryaNymeriaVisenya
The Seven did not exist at the time of the pact. It was created as a type of manifest destiny excuse for the Andals to go to Westeros
Salagia369
OK fair point if the pact was truly 8000 years ago you are right. Maybe it's not the religion of the 7 specifically but any foreign religion being introduced to the north sparking the return.
Orphalesion
So now the return of the Others is Catelyns fault as well? The Faith of the Seven seems to be one of the religions which is not associated with magic, so a building dedicated to them would have little chance of upsetting the "native magic" of the North, if that is what you are implying. The return of the Others seems to be connected to some sort of natural cycle, kind of like the Ice Ages.
Jak Scaletongue
So now the return of the Others is Catelyns fault as well? Technically, the OP blamed Ned, not Catelyn, for the Sept. The building of the Sept never actually occurred to me as a catalyst. But I've been considering the Others as something that doesn't measure time the way humans do. I'm a bit attached to the idea that Aegon the Conqueror was what "woke" the Others up, and I've always kinda of equated the Others with the CotF when it comes to time-keeping. Leaf's what, 200 years old? And she seems to be "young" - so if the Others are like the CotF in that regard; 300 years since Aegon I wasn't all that long ago to the CotF (and in my head, the Others). But that's just me. I feel like the Others have far more in common with the "ancient" races than with humans. Time-keeping included :).
Lemon of Lemonwood
If it were so,wouldn't the building of the Snowy Sept do it too? No,I think not.It doesn't sound as a large sept, more like a private chappel of sorts. Not enough to turn the North to the Seven.
DMC
Who knew, all this time the Others were just virulent inquisitors.
Luddagain
I think the return of the others is connected with the Doom of Valyria AND with the disappearance of the original sword Ice. They seemed to occur at roughly the same time. It seems that the arrival of the Targs hurried along the decline of the NW, so that instead of Knights and Lordlings seeking honour, the wall got criminals.
