Cats

Recommended Posts

Talk about cats. Goddamn if I'm going to have a 5 page thread about dogs on the first page of this forum, and no feline representation to balance it out.

So spill about your little aloof, contrary tyrannical overlord bastard friends, et cetera et cetera. The weird shit they do, the bizarre demands the make, all their odd little peccadilloes

I live with four of them at the moment (they're the flatmates', not mine, but I'm a cat person anyway so I don't mind).

One is gentle, loving, and three-legged via accident.

One is overly affectionate, doesn't take no for an answer, and is somehow strangely endearing.

The remaining two are mother and son. Bad tempered scroungers who wouldn't hesitate to start munching on your cold dead corpse.

There's this cat that wears a hat made out of a lime.

A pomelo actually.

We had a cat up until a about 18 months ago.  He was cute and silly and smelly and noisy and prone to jumping on us when we least expected it but we loved that little animal.

Maybe we'll get another one in due course.

My neighbours cats hunt singing birds, lizards and other little animals on our land. :(

My little son loves them (but he also loves the ants in their anthill next to our woodpile and he likes the wizards and the grashoppers and everything else), but I really hate that they are driving away the already rare ground-breeding birds from our land. Then again, they also hunt the occasional root vole, little bastards that killed a fresh planted apple tree.

I really dislike the whole notion of "cat people" vs. "dog people." 1) reductive 2) encourages offensive commentary about fellow human beings 3) frequently invites people to post their fantasies about what violence they'd visit upon animals they don't like.

Eh? I self-identify as a cat person in the sense that I like cats and prefer them over dogs. Doesn't mean I actually dislike dogs.

You don't, but there are plenty of people who do. But what I'm most focusing on, for this thread, is the constant barrage of "cats deserve to die" and "cat people are lame, just like their animals" I see whenever that topic comes up (and it comes up a lot on my FB feed -- at least twice a week). It's one of the dumbest fucking things to take sides on, and I guess what I am saying is that I am not gonna tolerate that shit in this thread.

There's a quote I read once, I can't remember who said it, and I'm paraphrasing a bit but it went like this:

Humanity has a special responsibility to dogs, we bred them to love us unconditionally and they don't have a choice in the matter so we need to take care of them. But a cat's love is even more valuable because we didn't breed them, they chose to be with us.

Dogs have owners. Cats have staff. But I'm very fond of being staff for my cats. They purr in my lap.

:)

I'd argue its the other way around. Dogs are the high maintenance ones, with all the walkings and the barrage of training needed just to be able to live with them (housebreaking, etc.); cats want attention too, but don't require it just to live indoors.

My cat has exactly one bad habit, which is a tendency to try to tear anything and everything down off the walls. Beyond that, he's all good.

Turtle is pretty much the same, only her vice is scratching at the carpet.

Crowbar on the other hand (god rest her zombie bones) I swear was half puppy, half monkey, half maniac. Her favorite nap/ambush spot was on top of the living room door, would climb the roman blinds and spider-man around them, and chew through damn near anything containing treats or other tasty food that wasn't locked in the fridge.

I love cats. I've lived with as many as 5 (!!!) in the house at any given time but right now am cat-less and poorer for it. I keep saying I'm going to get one but I'm gone from home so often now with my job that I'd feel bad for leaving them alone.

The neighbors have outdoor kitties that I'm on friendly terms with, though. One of them sits next to a tree in my front yard sometimes and waits for me to come home from work so he can get belly rub.  :)
