Minuteman
GRRM was recently in the news for comments made regarding comic book based movies and heroes/villains. Here is his quote: "I am tired of this Marvel movie trope where the bad guy has the same powers as the hero. The Hulk fought the Abomination, who is just a bad Hulk. Spider-Man fights Venom, who is just a bad Spider-Man. Iron Man fights Ironmonger, a bad Iron Man. Yawn. I want more films where the hero and the villain have wildly different powers. That makes the action much more interesting." The ice dragon concept has a dedicated group of fans but I think this comment ends forever the speculation that one does or will exist in the asoiaf universe. Whatever power the Others have (beyond simply raising wights) it isn't control of an ice dragon. Perhaps they can freeze a dragon out of the air, perhaps they have scorpion bolts tipped with the ice equivalent of dragonglass, or more likely GRRM will simply surprise us, but what we won't see is ice dragons fighting fire dragons. Fanless Mace
That's quite a leap of logic. I'm not sold.
Darkstream
I don't understand the logic in this. If the Others are ice, fighting with a ice dragon against a fire dragon then their powers are opposite not the same.

Darkstream
world book says they are fanciful tales Yes, but if Maester Yandel thought anyone would believe him, he'd claim that fire dragons weren't real either.
Lord Wraith
Yes, but if Maester Yandel thought anyone would believe him, he'd claim that fire dragons weren't real either. Indeed. Like how everything Septon Barth says is instantly dismissed.

If the Others are ice, fighting with a ice dragon against a fire dragon then their powers are opposite not the same. So an ice dragon and a fire dragon to your mind have "wildly different powers"? They would both, presumably, be large strong flying beasts where fire dragons breath flame and ice dragons breath frost. I believe that would fall under his "yawn" comment. Ice spiders at least have some written basis as possibly existing. Ice dragons do not.
Colton Casados-Medve
And the Others were thrown in with grumpkins and snarks. I'm not one way or the other on ice dragons. If they are in, I trust GRRM to write them in a way that is enjoyable and satisfying. If they are not in, I still trust him to make it enjoyable. I want the goddamn hound-sized ice spiders though! Minuteman
True enough. But does that mean no DoD 2? Fire dragon vs fire dragon. That was civil war. The war with the Others is something entirely different.
Darkstream
That was civil war. The war with the Others is something entirely different. Are you saying that there's no civil war happening/coming?

Darkstream
Ice spiders at least have some written basis as possibly existing. Ice dragons do not. That's if you disregard the World book and the Ice dragon constellation. I know it's not much but still.
Minuteman
Are you saying that there's no civil war happening/coming? Not with three dragons and one (possibly three) Targaryans. That would be at worst a family squabble. There is a civil war between family dynasties involving people only but not among the one family that controls dragons so very different from DoD. What is going on between the Others and everyone else is total war.

But if Victorian, Tyrion, or whoever else might end up riding/stealing a dragon or two and turns on Danny you have dragon vs dragon.
