Season 6: What will be the opening scene?

To recap, the opening scenes of the previous five seasons:

Season 1:  Ser Waymar Royce's ranging.

Season 2:  Joffrey's nameday tourney.

Season 3:  Sam encounters the White Walkers' abstract art, gets upbraided for failing.

Season 4:  Tywin has Ice melted down.

Season 5:  Cersei's flashback to Maggy the Frog.

Two of these (Seasons 1 & 3) are literal or loose adaptations of the openings of their respective books.  Season 2 is from the first chapter of its book (the prologue having been shuffled to later in the episode).  Season 4 is to date the only season that wasn't adapting a whole novel (or multiple whole novels, more or less), and opened with a rendition of a moment that we're only told about.  Season 5 consolidates a few flashbacks from later in one of its books to serve as its opening scene.

Season 1's opening introduces what is (supposedly, we're still waiting) the main threat of the entire series, otherwise not having a whole lot to do with most of the story that season.  Season 2 establishes very firmly the new world order in King's Landing, the central story of that season, with mad King Joffrey, Sansa as his miserable intended, and Tyrion arriving to shake things up.  Season 3 is immediate followup to Season 2's cliffhanger ending.  Season 4 is probably my favourite of the bunch, serving as the balancing point in the story of Tywin Lannister, with him melting down Ice serving as the final summation of his big victory in the prior season, but also marking the high point of his career, in a season that will end with him dying on the toilet, his dynasty beginning its collapse.  Season 5 introduces the prophecy, setting up both Cersei's motivations in one of the central stories this season, which is leading both to her total humiliation and the death of another of her children by season's end.

Having in mind all that, in terms of what the writers like to open a season with, what might we expect in Season 6?  Reviewing the various storylines:

Jon

Akin to Season 3's opening with Sam, this would be the immediate followup to the final image of the prior season.  A strong candidate, but it really depends on what exactly is going to happen with Jon.  If nothing happens with his body immediately, or the writers want to keep it a mystery, this may not be it.  I could also see something like a mysterious shot of Ghost roaming the snows, or whatever.

Bran

Bran's been gone for a season, and (fingers crossed) will hopefully start becoming more prominent from The Winds of Winter forward.  Opening the season with him would be a strong statement as to his importance.  If, as some have speculated, Bran might have something to do with Jon's resurrection, there might even be crossover between this and the earlier option of opening with Jon's story.

Winterfell

When we last saw Sansa and Theon they were jumping off a huge wall, in a poorly-shot scene that left many Unsullied viewers convinced they were committing suicide.  Perhaps even more than Jon's story, this one really feels like it should pick up immediately after it left off, akin, again, to Sam in season 3 -- but also akin to Sam in season 3, I'm quite certain they aren't going to offer any explanation for how they get out of the seemingly hopeless scenario we last saw them in.  If Sansa and Theon inaugurate the season, it will begin with them running through the woods some time later.  But I'd consider this a decent possibility.

King's Landing

Meereen

Dothraki Sea

Arya

I've grouped all of these together because I think they're all unlikely candidates for the opening, and likely to pick up a while after we last saw the characters.  Meereen and KL, especially, seem likely to be engaged in a lot of table-setting the next time we see them.

Ironborn

If Euron is going to be a big deal this season, it's not outside the realm of possibility they'll open things with, say, the death of Balon and Euron declaring himself the new king.  Given how little context the show has given the Ironborn, probably not, though.

Sam & Gilly

I'm reasonably certain we won't see these two until Episode 2.

Dorne

Actually, when I said that Sansa and Theon's was the only other storyline that needed to pick up right after, I was wrong.  Next season should open with Nym realizing that the boat has turned around, and Ellaria and co. attempting to flee, before Jaime, Bronn and Trystane have them arrested and executed.  Then Bronn looks directly into the camera and apologizes for wasting everyone's time last season.

I think it will be the wall. The fallout from Jons stabbing and Mel is just back as well with an angry Davos. This has to be dealt with. Jon will be back within a few episodes I would imagine as he is still filming regularly in Belfast. We will know more depending on how long he is pictured filming here. If he's gone in a few weeks I would guess he will only be back near the end of the season as they like to film scenes in final episodes at the start as with Cersei walk of shame

Great and comprehensive post.

It is pretty difficult to figure out what the main themes of this season are going to be because we don't have TWOW yet. But I think a flashback by Bran (not immediately the Tower of Joy scene, they will have to build up to that) is the most likely candidate, followed closely by some Jon's mysterious fate scene (I really think Jon is gone for most or the entirety of Season 6, especially after they confirmed GoT might have 8 seasons instead of 7).

I agree with your reasons for starting with Bran, especially if he has an impactful role this season. I think the Tower of Joy scene will be one of the big twists of the series (R+L=J reveal) so it won't start the season. However, Bran's abilities will be established in the open, most likely with a vision of Young Ned (who they seem to be casting with young Robert and Hodor or Brandon).

Jon/the Wall will be after the open. They won't drag that out.

No worries, and your English seems fantastic to me.

It is the autocorrect.  :cool4:

But I really don't understand how they might say such a thing. Maybe they were joking, I don't know. GoT goes out of its way to ensure almost every major character in the series gets an arc every season, as the OP stated so well commenting the opening scenes. And arcs can only be made with themes, motifs, etc.

And that's why I think it will be Bran, like DarkHorse stated above. Can be Euron, too, since I believe that he and Victarion will be merged into one character and the major episode (probably the ninth) of the season will be the war on Meereen, with Dany, Tyrion and gang being saved by the ironborn on the last minute. Or something like that.

That one about "made sense creatively..." is my favorite. They contradict themselves in the same sentence!

But overall I think they've been doing a good job. Seasons 1-3 were better, but I get what I can.

Up until season 4 I'd say they were doing a decent enough job with some very big mistakes jaime raping cersei, talisa existing, dany in quarth, cutting some of stannis' best dialogue but honestly I think they don't care as mush with season 5 it seemed like a lazy effort. I know the amount of work that goes into a season but it's what it seemed like to me.

And needle is revenge is my favourite. It's jon snows smile damn it
