Exercise and Fitness - Because sitting on your ass all day long is boring ;)

The old thread will be closed soon, so the new one is in order.

Carry on.

My ankle is almost back to 100% but I'll wait another week or so, just to be safe.

Weather-wise we're still in a heatwave. Can you still call it a heatwave if it lasts a month or so?

It's been 33-34ºC or higher every day for the past month.

Not a good training weather, not at all.

18 to 24 is average for a man, over 24 is going into obese territory

Where did you find this data?

Three months ago I had my medical and the report said the desired range is 10-20% for men.

I was at 13.7% body fat at the time.

In fairness, "desired" and "average" do not mean the same thing. 24% isn't particularly overweight, but could be improved upon.

I always find this picture a pretty handy guide to what different bf percentages actually mean (may not be safe to open at work):

Yeah, I'm around 17% body fat right now, trying to get below 15%.  Have another 8 lbs or so to go before I'm there, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Did HIIT cardio/light weights the last couple days and think I need to get up earlier and go for longer, it's getting easy.  Today I did a short yoga session then a few sets of chest and back.  Definitely seeing an increase in my strength, both in how many reps I'm doing and how my clothes are starting to fit.

I was 14% body fat at one point last year. I'm bummed to be at 20% now. I need to go back to a strict diet but it sucks that just "eating right" isn't good enough anymore. Getting regular exercise again will help too, I was sidelined for about six weeks but am back in now.

After trying to donate blood and being rejected, I went to the doctor and got diagnosed with severe anemia about a month ago. I've been taking iron supplements since then, and OH BOY, the difference in how I feel both working out and just day-to-day is phenomenal. I just did my first speed work-out at the track after signing up for a marathon middle of November. My pace is about a minute per mile faster than I used to be, and I didn't have trouble finishing my intervals. This entire time I've been thinking hitting the wall and exhaustion were part of working out.

Oh I <3 health care.

I'm also looking to drop a few pounds before running the marathon and getting back to what used to be my normal weight. In retrospect, I've been trying to medicate anemia with coffee and sweets for years. I cut those two things out completely, and I LOVE how I feel.

Yeah, I would definitely recommend getting routine bloodwork done to anyone, just as a check-up. I'm certainly going to make it a yearly thing. Deficiencies suck!

When I said "desired range" I meant more along the lines of "the range you should aim for for both health and fitness reasons".

I may have misread Red Tiger - were they not just saying that most men are in the 18-24% range? That the "desired" range is 10-20% is just indicative that the average man is a bit overweight.

I played a match last season against a lad who was 25 stone and still pretty quick. It was unnatural. And horrible.

Heh, yeah, that sounds like fun. I don't think any of their players from the other day were quite 25 stone, maybe one of the props but, in fairness, I don't think he was faster than me.

It's always good when you turn up for a game and the opposition have got an absolute monster playing for them. It's usually some Tongan/Samoan freak of nature who's going to spend 80 minutes trying to rip your head off and you can't even hold it against him because when you speak to him after the game he's guaranteed to be a really nice guy.

That's pretty helpful as a guideline.  Based on that, I'm currently in the range of 12-15% and would like to get to 10-12%.

I find the BF pictures so hard to use as a guideline, simply because I quite honestly lack the required objectivity when looking at my body. Based off that, my BF% would vary like 10% just based on my mood. :) This is why I like to have nice objective measurements (weight and BF% from my scale, circumference measurements to the nearest half cm). Keeps me at least a little sane, although on the flip side can also make it easy to obsess over hitting or maintaining certain numbers. But for the most part it is a good thing for me.

Went for a run today at noon. Without having eaten in 16+ hours. I think the heat index was somewhere in the upper 90s, so basically, I am just glad to be alive. And cannot wait to get back to SoCal!!

As the largest player on my (very social-level) team, it usually falls to me to spend the entire game winding them up and getting a bit of niggle going, purely on the basis that it's better for them to be pounding away at 18 stone me than the 9 stone scrum half. It's rubbish.

At my absolute leanest I was 8.5% bodyfat but that was seven or eight years ago when I did practically nothing but train and had a 21-year-old's metabolism to boot. I haven't measured recently but I'm probably somewhere in the 15% range nowadays.

In other news the official recovery period on my dislocated rib has ended. I've tentatively got back into low-intensity kettlebell sessions, aiming to build back up to where I was pre-injury over a month or so. The injury-site still feels pretty tender and I'm not fully comfortable getting back into BJJ. I'll give it another week and then reassess. Once back in I'll probably go for two weeks of technique work only, no sparring. Then a week of flow-sparring only before getting back into full-intensity training. Had to miss the UK armed forces championship due to this and whilst I'm hugely impatient to be back in, I can't be dealing with a reoccurrence leading to more time off.

Welcome back from injury Liff and Baxus. The first week back is grueling but gratifying.

My swim last Saturday left me with a presumed ear infection. I've been too busy to see a doctor until later this afternoon but the last couple of days were really impaired by it. I can't workout until the pain/pressure/fever abates so I'm hoping it's just simple swimmer's ear and it responds quickly to antibiotics.

I've never played beach rugby, it looks like fun. I like (10th?) picture of the guy going for an extremely ambitious looking offload out of a two man tackle. Good confidence.

Need some advice about my this fall exercise/practice routine.

I need to choose a teacher/coach/mentor A or B.

A is an 'old star', temperamental, almost too demanding, my way or highway sort of teacher who really knows their business. Makes students cry, in fact. Both sad and happy tears.

B is highly professional, young, cheerful, talented but not as specialized to a certain set. Always a fun workout but I'm not sure if A's tuition will actually advance me, push me or inspire me.

What am I gonna do?
I want to go forward but not be pushed to a point of total frustration, or feel like I should just give up.
What would you do?

For me exercise/sports is about having fun and enjoying myself. A coach who demands that much authority doesn't sound fun to me personally but I guess you need to weigh up the pros and cons of results/enjoyment.

Sure its about fun but a big part of that comes from seeing myself advance.
Option A would be less fun in the 'relax and enjoy' -way.

But I'm afraid A will make me sad and that I'd want to quit.
And with B I might get frustrated differently.

Its hard to choose, thanks for the help! :)
