I just kinda realized is danny waiting till her dragons are full grown and have a rider for each to go to westeros? I mean ik she has slavers bay to deal with but i feel like she could but more experienced rulers there while shes gone. and she has enough of an army and also will get some targarian loyalest support. Even if danny herelf isnt planning this maybe GRRM just wants full grown dragons cuz thatd be awesome so hes stalling? im very stupid and only skimmed through aDwD so maybe this is already said idk

I'm not sure Danny is aware that George is pulling all the strings, so she probably just thinks she's doing what a Queen should do under such circumstance. Unbeknownst to her, George has an entire plot laid out, and is summoning his creative devices to make things interesting for us all. Though, until Tyrion made his way down to her court, I found her chapters the least interesting.

Danerys wants meeren and slavers bay to be secure and she also wants to abolish slavery plus, her dragons a young she's waiting for them to grow up and have riders so as to effectively conquer the seven kingdoms. I also advice that you read a dance with dragons not just skim through it,you will better understand why she's still in meeren

Is it not quite clear that Dany wants to stay at Mereen in order to deal with her past mistakes, and make up for what she did wrong at Astapor, she realises she can't just go off on a master-killing spree, setting free slaves without setting up a stable system which she is trying to do. She is also trying to learn how to rule, and is understanding how she, as a ruler, can't always do as she wishes.

Oh, just realised this post is from several months ago, but never mind.

She has progressed from slave-wife to a Khal to being Queen in her own right. She needs to prove herself to everyone, and to herself. Otherwise why bother trying to conquer Westeros?

Think of it like a practice run. She tried ruling Mereen with concessions and treaties, but it didn't work. Now she knows fire and blood are the only 100% sure fire way to conquer and stay on top. She can use this experience to go full Dragon in Westeros.

a proper read would have given you what you wanted.

She doesn't know what she wants and she doesn't know what to do, even when she reacted to events during the book, she did well, but she didn't have a "grand strategy". Maybe at the end of the book, she figures it out finally, and will now have enough determination to do it. She got herself entangled in Slaver Bay and she had no way out after she conquered Mereen, no actually, she had no choice once she freed the slaves. She needed to settle them and feed them and that's what she decides in the beginning "to be a queen."

The whole marriage affair, war with Yunkai and the events in the pit, with the visions she had while shitting and drinking convinced her that was a lost cause. She could never rule Mereen, and these people will never accept her as their legitimate ruler. Her choice is to go West, and that's what she will do, but not before stopping at Mereen first. She figures out who she is, and she will teach the world the meaning of their words... those were her last thoughts before the rider or dinner came along at the very end.

She will destroy the Yunkai, or arrive on time to destroy the army of Volantis... Don't want to spoil from released chapters. But you know what happens with the besieging army anyway...

So the BIG question that really bothers me about Danny is what exactly is she going to do with her "Children," the few hundred thousands she adopted along the way? What's the future of Slavery in Slavery Bay? And what about her Dothraki, few thousands with the new Khalasar?! are they going west on the Iron Men's wooden horses?

She will have enough ships for her armies, but probably not the freed slaves. The Iron Fleet, and the Volantene fleet, once defeated, should be enough to carry 10,000-12,000 unsullied, including the boys, probably 15-20,000 Dothraki, 1000 Sellswords, and Strong Belwas, Penny and Tyrion. Missandei, Grey-Worm, Daario, Tyrion, Brown, Jorah, Ser Barristan, Victarian, Marwen, Moqorro.... who is going along for the ride? She will make a call at Volantis, a quick debt payment, free the slaves and put the Widow in charge.

Maybe Pentos afterwards, Dragonstone, the vale, the storm lands, a far trip east to Assai and arrive Westeros from the west instead?

Game of Thrones Academy has a theory that Danny will load the ships but the ships will be crushed by storms and nearly all lost on the trip to Westeros. This has been foreshadowed in the books by the brutal storms in the Narrow Sea so far, but also in history with Mongol-Chinese/Japan, and Rome/Carthage. Rome lost a couple of fleets along the coast of Sicily and so did the Mongols/Chinese re Japan.

Tyrion never made his way into her court. At least not yet

Unsolicited factoid: The smashing of the Mongol invader's fleet is the basis of the term kamikaze or 'divine wind'

It must have seemed so to Japan, and the Mongols back then to ascribe it to a god, and not admit that you fucked up the scheduling lol

Duh! She's waiting for Prince Charming to come and sweep her off her feet. GRRM loves happy endings, he once produced the Beauty and the Beast TV series.

Errr... Actually, Kelly C is just hanging with the Death Rock E, waiting for Speedy Gonzales to finish writing her plot line. Just finish the damn book already!

Okay, in all seriousness George R R Martin referred to this as the Meereenese Knot. Over the last few books, George had created a maddenly complex series of plot lines which all needed to connect perfectly in time and space... at Meereen. He actually re-wrote the Dany chapters three different times because he wasn't satisfied with how all the moving pieces fit together. That's what happens when you write a 10,000 page story with hundreds if not thousands of different characters. Truly mind boogling!

GRRM decided to abandon his originally planned five-year gap between parts one and two of the (then thought as a three-act) storyline.

Had he kept the five-year gap he would have been able to fast-forward to Dany's invasion of Westeros. As things stand he can't do that so he has to tell us Dany's story in Essos first.

Also as MLR already pointed out above now that GRRM has to write that Essos story he has to write it so that it fits with the other character arcs. And that's a gargantuan task, considering how many balls GRRM is juggling.

In my opinion GRRM does a good job at making it clear what's causing the delay of Dany's invasion.

First she needed an army but did not have one, so went to Slaver's Bay to aquire it.

Then she had no transport for the new army and thus had to start marching.

That led her to the other two slaver cities and having seen the lot of the slaves and given her own background and empathy she could not bring herself to simply ignore them. So she took upon herself - in what one might call either massive hubris or massive heroism or both - the enormous task of ending slavery.

That's one of those jobs which easily take a lifetime - if that's enough. So once she had taken it upon herself to tackle the slavery problem it wasn't at all surprising that she didn't manage to make any more progress westwards.

Think of it like Afghanistan or Iraq or Vietnam. You might as well ask: Why did the troups stay so long? What were they waiting for? The reason is that invading something is the easy part. But setting things in order and disentangling yourself, that's difficult and takes time. And GRRM is not an author who skips over the real problem with a 'and since she ruled wisely everything was automatically set right and she traveled on to Westeros'. GRRM is trying to be honest and realistic there and not hush-hush things under the carpet. So we get shown the whole mess and the whole it-never-is-easy and mistakes-get-made part.

I know that's hard for some readers. I loved it.

Also the advantage is that we see Dany's struggle and education phase and thus - for me at least - her growing into a conqueror is more realistic. I don't have to suspend disbelief as much as I would have had to if she had just turned into a superqueen overnight.

With whom would she go to Westeros? Some thousend remaining Unsullied, maybe. I don't believe that a big army would follow her. She has no ships, not enough knowlegde of Westeros and virtually no allies in Westeros. Her dragons are not under her controll and still pretty vulnurable. An invasion here and now would end as a desaster.

Young Griff is way better prepared.

Essentially yeah, she's waiting on her dragons to grow. In Dance she talks about wanting to set Mereen right and not abandon her "children," but from the practical standpoint of the story she can't invade Westeros with half-grown dragons. The fact that we have sit through the whole Mereen storyline is just a product of GRRM scrapping the five year gap.
