He doesn't want to play the game, he only does so out of his unwavering loyalty to Stannis. If Stannis dies he'll go back to his wife and kids. Other than referencing a bunch of stuff from the a TV show which spoiled the books....HBO GOT didn't spoil nuthin. It's fanfic. Stannis will die, but not by Brienne's hand at Winterfell. Daenerys will have Drogo roast him at the Trident, when she takes all his power, similar to the way Stannis took Renly's power at Storm's End. Not to mention, he has a thing for following the right cause even against self preservation/common sense(like, pretty much every Northern lord, save Bolton). I feel right when Stannis dies in the books (it was inevitable, even before GoT), magic ***** will start to go down involving the others, and Davos will join the side to try and stop the Ice Zombie Apocalypse over the side still squabbling for the worlds most uncomfortable chair. Davos is unimportant in the scheme of things and everyone thinks he's dead.Whether they want his family or not, they'll certainly want his castle. Assuming Davos were dead, what would you do with the now disposessed family of your rival's deceased chief lieutenant? And Davos is not going to stay dead forever, so unless they just send the wife and kids packing or execute them, sooner or later they are going to take custody of Davos's family.
