How Aegon IV Destroyed House Targaryen

Loyal, Honorable, Kind, Wise, Faithful. These are words one does NOT use to describe Aegon IV, the Unworthy. Lets see besides raping his sister wife to death, Or sleeping with dozens of women, aegon IV was busy smearing his brother and sister's names. Even when the Dragonknight died defending him, he continued to smear them. He wanted to invade dorne for no reason but to cause war. many believed he killed his own father to be king faster. He also tried to disinherit his son, in favor of his bastards. When he died, he was fat and gross, so much he had flesh worms going through his body. The maesters said they never saw something like this, while the septons said it was sent by the gods to punish him for his sins. but unlike other bad kings, he would not go away, as he legitimized all his bastards. The Blackfryes would rebel 5 times.

now you ask, how did this bad king destroy the great house of Targaryen? well the 5th and final blackfrye rebellion led to many westerosi lords to realize that the targaryens without dragons needed the lords more than the lords needed the tarageryens. It also lead to the starkss marrying out of the north, which lead to Ned being fostered in the Vale, and Lyanna being engaged to Robert Baratheon. had it not been for the war of the 9 penny kings many of the lords would not have known each other.

Anyone agree or disagree.\?

Aegon IV's bastards caused major problems.  I don't think that's the main reason, however, for the downfall of House Targaryen.  And it's not the lack of dragons.  They were in power for most of 300 years without a single dragon.  The last king presided over a kingdom of prosperity and riches.   The problems were twofold, actually.  The tragedy at Summerhall and Rhaegar's motivation for seducing Lyanna.

Summerhall reduced the family down to Aerys, Rhaella, Rhaegar, Viserys, Rhaeny and Aegon.  Rhaegar's infatuation ignited the rebellion.

I disagree. The Blackfyres were not the cause of the Targaryen downfall and if anything the lords should have realized their worth after the first Blackfyre Rebellion.

The abduction of Lyanna was the catalyst, but without the war of the 9 penny kings the alliances that took place may not have happened.

OP, Aegon didn't start smearing Aemon and Naerys' names until after both of them were dead.  Cause if he's started that before, Aemon might have killed him.

Agreed on all the rest though.  If he hadn't started the rumors about Daeron not being his, and then given Blackfyre to Daemon, far fewer people would have supported the first rebellion.

Maegar was cruel, Aerys was mad, Joffrey was evil. but only Aegon was truly in every aspect unworthy.

I think the downfall was not caused by aegon IV.
Although he did make a lot of trouble for his descendants.
The downfall came from the madness of Aerys and rhaegar who could not manage to bang a woman in a normal and smart way.

By all means, dump on Aerys' technique and proclivities, but Rhaegar's preferences while at times extracurricular are not known to be abnormal or stupid.

if his behavior was not abnormal or stupid, the rebellion would not be so successful.

I agree Rhaegar may be a great guy, but GRRM had to make him do something really stupid to destroy his house and dynasty, so that it will provide a background for the whole series. Otherwise we will not have the whole story.

Did he himself start those rumours? I thought it was Daemon who did, after his death.

No, Aegon 4 did that when Daeron protested his plan to attack Dorne. Before that Aegon 4 had no issue with Daeron and there was no rumor about his parentage at all

And Aegon only felt free to start those rumors because both Naerys and the Dragonknight were dead. Cause if he'd tried that while Aemon was alive, those KG vows might not have saved him.
