After Hungary has closed the border with Serbia, the refugees are being directed to take the other route through Croatia and Slovenia. Austria is planning to start controlling the whole southern and eastern border, to Italy, Slovenia and Slovakia.

Oh boy, after reading just a handful of threads on various forums and on facebook, I've noticed the amount of people that think the issue of immigration and refugees is as simple as "if you don't accept refugees you're a racist bigot but if you do then you're just fine" is way too damn high.

You did forget to mention that the amount of people that think that refugees are just out on a field trip to see what's up in Western Europe is even higher.

failure to accept refugees is based on what legitimate policy objective, precisely, when the failing states boast otherwise of being members of liberal organizations such as the EU (which commit the states party to the free movement of persons), and furthermore have ratified humanitarian agreements such as the convention on refugees (which prohibits refoulement), inter alia?

There seems to be some riot or something on Serbian-Hungarian border.

Initial reports say that refugees have gotten through the fence and that Hungarian army/police are using tear gas and water cannons to control the crowd.

Not good.

Welll, to be honest, what they are doing is following the rules of this liberal organization called the EU. This is kind of the elephant (or should I say Trump) in the room.

And they are doing nothing less than what for example Great Britain is doing in calais, well the only differance is that they really kind of are with their backs to the wall unlike Britain which has to deal with close to no refugee.

It is kind of interesting that what happens in the Europeen Union on a nation scale is also happening within the specific countries in a personal level.

While the upper/upper middle class hides behind lawyers to prevent any kind of refugee center in their area (with some nobel exceptions) the only way for the lower class to object is to burn down the building before it can be used.  And in the same predictible pattern the poor are called out as racists while the racism of the "high born" is absolved. Made even more cynical by the fact that the fears of the lower class is actually justified while the fear of the higher classes ist not.

Except of course that they are not. In a previous thread I linked to the Schengen Border Code which clearly states that the requirement to deny access to the Schengen area to those without proper documentation, does not apply to persons that can be admitted for humanitarian reasons.

Free movement of people (and I doubt if this principle will still apply this time next year) applies to EU nationals. Not to people from outside the EU.

Not really. There's, in principle, free movement of people within the Schengen area to anyone who's legally within the area.

Legally is the magical word. If you come illegally over the border...

To be perfectly honest, I can't really fault authorities for handling illegal border crossings as a major offense.

On the other hand, making legal crossing next to impossible for people fleeing war in their countries will force that people to cross the border illegally and in my book that's much worse than sneaking over the imaginary line in the field.

  • 1 month later...

I think Sweden started to ask help to the EU last week or something like that (financial support, ...)

Our (Belgian) secretary of state was hopeful because the number of refugees asking asylum did decrease. However, if I am correct, we had again record asking asylum.

and

Last week when I was taking the train to Netherlands from Belgium, somebody disrupted my reading of GOT. I was actually annoyed and confused, because my ticket was already checked by a conductor. I really did not understood why he was disrupting me and what was happening. And suddenly that guy asked my passport.

I was so excited. I got checked at the border. Bye bye Schengen!
