What was the cause of the Long Night? Mythical Astronomy of Ice and Fire Podcast #1

12186366_1113459382012400_13924598355626The Long Night was the most important event in the history of the world of ASOIAF. And yet, we have basically no idea what caused it.  The only information we get about it comes down to us in legends and folktales.

Luckily for us, those legends and folktales aren't just funny little stories to be told "at a woman's teat" or recorded in whimsical song. Indeed, I think that the mythology George has created for ASOIAF is highly metaphorical, and actually contains the truth of the Long Night hidden behind the language of the "bard's truth."

I belive I have had a fair amount of success deciphering these Dawn Age legends, and the picture they seem to be painting is of a truly world-shaking series of magically infused natural cataclysms. It all starts with the legend of Azor Ahai, Nissa Nissa, and Lightbringer, but we're also going get into the mythical tales of Durran Godsgrief and his deadly tsunami, the Grey King and his stolen fire of the gods, and of the Hammer of the Waters which broke the world in two.

To be blunt: we used to have a second moon, it got hit by some kind of big ass magical comet, and the meteors raining down on poor old Planetos caused a nuclear winter type scenario, compounded by magical mayhem.  You may have heard of some version of my hypothesis in your journeys around the Internet - come get the story straight from the Lucifer's mouth, as I will now read to you aloud the new and improved version of the original "comet kills second moon and causes the Long Night" theory which I released on the forum back in March.

I am grateful to be able to present to you the Mythical Astronomy of Ice and Fire Podcast, Episode 1: Astronomy Explains the Legends of Ice and Fire. You can listen at the link or just look it up on iTunes.

Thanks to everyone who has participated in all of the various threads which have served to develop this theory, and thanks very much for giving the podcast a try. :)

I have been reading on this forum for several months now. The theories you posit, I have found by far some of the most well-researched, thoroughly comprehensive and very well written. :-)
I have since also followed your blog and am glad to see you have started the podcast, good for you!
Your series of posts, along with many others such as Radio Westeros, have made me completely reconsider AsoIaF and what it means.

So, thank you and I look forward to seeing how it all plays out!

I am currently working on a counter theory.  Not to insult, I'm looking at the possibility that rather than natural events, many of the legends can be traced back to the elder races warring with each other.  I was planning on messaging it to you before I post it to see if you have any feedback.

It's all good friend :) I definitely think Martin's metaphors refer to multiple things, not just the astronomical events. Azor Ahai's sword was a comet that hit the moon, but I think Azor Ahai also had a literal magic sword and did perform some dark blood magic ritual. Following this pattern, there's no conflict with you idea that it has some sort of connotation regarding wars between different humanoid factions. Go ahead and lay it on me if you want. :)

Thanks very much for your kind words of support! It's definitely a slightly different way of looking at the books, but one which I think was intended. As you do future re-reads, you'll probably see astronomical symbolism jumping out at you... BOO!!  But don't be scared, it's just mythical astronomy. ;)

Just want to say I found fingerprints of the dawn a few months ago and ever since then encouraged friends and co-workers to read it.

If even half of what you hypothesize turns out to be true, well just wow.

Thanks and carry on good ser.

Right back atchya! Thank you, good Ser, for spreading the word. I'm really looking forward to doing an update of the Fingerprints essay. I think it's going to be podcast #3, but we'll have to see. :)

As I have said earlier. I think this is a very solid consolidation of your basic theory. The Alchemical Wedding of Daenery Targaryen is one of your best pieces of writing.

Well I thank you, ser, for saying it again here, since your last comment had vanished into the ether! ;) Kidding aside, it means a lot coming from you, my thanks. Anytime you have a new essay or theory you let me know and I will link to that shit. I think you might consider a 2.0 version of 'Red Queen Blue Queen,' I think you can take that concept farther, and I think it's a HUGE clue, probably the best we have, about the Night's Queen and what she was.

P.S. what do you think of the Podcast logo? I photoshopped it myself.

Unfortunately I can't access the podcast on my ps4. The essays are fabulous. The symbolism of Mountain v Oberyn is mindblowing. The Godseye stuff is very impressive. Your theory is almost impossible to refute- GRRM might be doing this unconsciously. He might well say 'sometimes a spear is just a spear', and your theory could still be true. The idea that individual scenes like Mountain v Oberyn are fractal-like repetitions of the comet/moon event, is brilliant.

Ah ha, I see you've read my blog all the way to the end, my thanks! Glad you enjoyed it, King of the Slums. The Gregor - Oberyn duel is pretty heavy on the symbolism, no doubt. That was a juicy nugget to unwrap when I first discovered it. The Gregor eclipse is pretty on-the-nose. ;)

So the podcast past doesn't play through your PS4? Does it have a browser or what? I'm not sure if this will help, but here is the direct rss link. You can also get it on iTunes. Send me a message if it doesn't work, I'd like to figure it out. :)

The logo looks great.

I'm still waylaid by time constraints. Oh, to have the time I had in my 20's. I recently went back and fleshed out my AER essay, (which I have posted no where) but going back over both essays I realized that the One God, Two God essay is much more in depth. (Which is funny to me, because numerically it got much less love.) I actually wanted to expand on it by going into Beric  and Jon's imminent resurrection, but again, time, time, time Maybe over Thanksgiving, . . sadly I'm not cooking this year, so yeah, I could squeeze out some time.

I am hoping to pull it together this weekend.  I've been marking quotes in twoiaf and the novels all week but after staring at a computer all day at work my eyes can only take so much.

Cool, looking forward to it! Definitely leave a link here when you post it. :)

Damn peoples. Lucifers gone big time

Well, not sure about that, but I DID record my essays into a microphone, that much we can say for sure. ;)

Mostly I am trying to give people a way to ingest my essays in an easier format, since my writing and analysis runs a bit long. I happen to be a musician and so I already had all the audio equipment and software to do a podcast so I figured what the hell.
