SuperMario Posted December 10, 2015 Share Posted December 10, 2015 So we know that all those websites claiming to know the release date of Winds of Winter are likely wrong as GRRM as said he will not play tricks and will let everyone know when it's finished on his Not A Blog site.I'm not questioning that, but my question is how long on average the editing process takes of his books? I imagine it would take up to a few months due to the size and complexity, especially TWOW. I know he really wants the book out before the show, which is set to air in early April. So if that is the case, he would need to be done with the first draft about now.And do you think he would announce when the first draft is completed and sent to editing, or will he wait until the book is completely finished? As for your second question, GRRM said he'll announce once he finishes the book, ergo before editing.ETA:Are his books edited only once finished, or are chapters edited as they are done? Option two could speed things up considerably.I think the former. Problem with the latter is that GRRM often changes earlier chapter after writing later ones. I remember him once saying something like: The good news is, I finished one more chapter. The bad news is, it's the same chapter I finished 3 times before. He needs to make sure all those dots connect so the ghost of Renly has blue eyes instead of not green ones.It is a miracle he doesn't take far longer than he has done with the books already. Genius takes time. It will take more time in these last books because of all those individual character arcs that need to be tied and untied.It takes more time than the previous books not just with the writing but the editing to make sure everything is consistent. purple-eyes Posted December 10, 2015 Share Posted December 10, 2015 IMHO It is much easier to start and spread a story than to finish and end it. So I expect GRRM is slower in the last books. It is harder and harder since you have to connect all the parts and make all the things consistent. Just like people said, why Renly has different colors for eyes? why Nym has fair and olive skin at the same time? why Ned met Cersei separately before he met Robert?And sometimes author also had something called "bottle-neck" or lost some interest in some certain parts so the author feels reluctant to speed up or he feels he needs to rewrite some parts because he changes his mind.
