i have this strange notion that more than one stark will return to winterfell at the end. From Bran's pov in asos, we have the conversation with a flint who gave shelter to Bran and his friends, where jojen tells the flint that the wolves will return to winterfell as he had seen it in his dreams

I think this is the reason Rickon was written into the story.

Then he'll be a new Wild Wolf of Winterfell. Barely educated, barely able to be kept civil, wild hair because he won't let anyone cut it, and a vicious direwolf by his side that he can barely control.

could be. We really do not know anything about Skagos. Could be the fact that all the characters in the book thinks it is one thing is GRRM setting us up for something completely different. The people there are said to respect the starks, and here comes one with a friggin DireWolf at his side and a Wildling protector. He may be a Wild Wolf, but we have no idea what kind of Wild that will be.

Rickon as Lord of Winterfell is a big red herring. His "wolf blood" - wildness - just like with his uncle Brandon and aunt Lyanna is what will doom him according to Ned and Arya's conversation. Arya is learning to temper and hide her feelings, which will help her a lot, not so much with Rickon.

Stannis will defeat Boltons rallying northerners around Rickon Stark, but in typical GRRM fashion the victory will be too costly as Rickon will die in the battle with Boltons.

Oh, and there will be no Winterfell by the end. There is something very powerful down in the crypts, and whatever it is will destroy the castle and make remaining House Stark members (Jon, Sansa, Arya and Bran) to move south to Harrenhal grounds and in Bran's case to Isle of Faces by God's Eye - a name which just screams as a place for a future deity.

Bran- I don't think he's going to leave that weirwood tree ever.

Sansa- Possibly, as much as every one of her plot arcs involves marrying her to some other lord, this would be a subversion of expectations or her to reign as Lady of Winterfell in her own right.

Arya- As much as her story arc revolves around death, I can't see it ending in anything but that.

Rickon- Stashed away in a nice safe plot free place until he's needed. Highly likely.

Jon- Assuming he lives he seems to have another destiny.

House Stark will be extinguished or live on through the female line but under the surname of the husband's House, whoever Sansa/Arya end up marrying.

Bran is a cripple and will be stuck to that tree

Arya will be driven mad and killed

Rickon is a wild wolf that will meet his untimely demise like Brandon

Jon may reclaim his birthright

Sansa most likely choice but probably barren

The Starks will probably live on through Robb's baby by Jeyne Westerling, now Jeyne Stark.

Rickon is all of six as of the last book. He was four when he last saw anything of him. I'd think writing him off as wild and destined to be killed is a bit premature. I'm uncertain where you get the notion that Sansa is barren either. As for Jeyne, given the whole hip thing was corrected in later versions, I doubt anything under the table is going on there and that it was ensured she wouldn't conceive.

I'm not sure why people get the impression that Skagos is a Cannibal-Infested land filled with wild, untamed humans, considering there is plenty of evidence that points to the very opposite.  Skago's has had men serve in the Nights Watch (even as First Ranger and Lord Commander).  They have a trade system set up with Westeros.  They have noble houses and banners much like the North, and even (at least at one time) had a strong enough naval presence to fight against the Starks.

There has been absolutely zero evidence of them being wild, corpse-eating humans.  In fact, there is plenty of evidence to support the very opposite.

Besides, Osha took Rickon there *on purpose* because she knew it would be safe for them.  I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have done so if she thought otherwise.

The whole "there must always be a stark in Winterfell," & jojen saying the wolves will return lead me to believe that at least one Stark will return. And it will be someone with not only Stark blood but with the Stark name so I don't think the male line will be extinguished & Sansa or Arya will rule through some husband. So it has to be one of sons. Robb is dead & Bran might be stuck in a tree for the rest of his life (even though I hope he's not). That leaves Rickon. Idk why people have given up on Rickon as some hopeless "wild wolf." Sheesh he was 4 and his mother, father, & big brother just left him. Then he saw Winterfell burning & had to be separated from Bran. How was he supposed to act as a 4 year old. I don't think he's beyond saving. And as others have said I don't think the ppl of Skagos are as savage as we have been led to believe.

I also don't think Winterfell is going to completely destroyed so there won't be Winterfell. At the end of ACOK Bran notes how the walls are still strong so that Winterfell still remains & can be rebuilt (not direct quote but that's the gist). I think this is foreshadowing about Winterfell continuing to stand.

I think you're forgetting one other Stark son.
