Corrent Gargalen

"An iron serpent you truly are, with that blade in hand. But do remember that serpents are but prey before the cockatrice, as is shown on the arms of my House. Another night, another day... and you may learn the truth of it, to your sorrow. I do not think we are men to forget a night such as this... either of us."

Dagur Saltcliffe, the Iron Serpent

"You are a capon, boy, not a cockatrice. Another night, another day, and I'll take your other eye."

Ser Myles Hightower, in the midst of torturing a poor bandit for information after the battle to rescue the shipwrecked ladies:

Ghastly screams can be heard coming from the hovel, often followed by the sound of someone yelling "Shut up!", only to be replaced by yet more screaming.

And later...

A final scream resounds from the hovel. "Fuck! He died on me!"

<Public> Rosalind peers. Wow, step away from the computer for a bit and the conversation goes to heck. ;)

<Public> Reyna says, "And Rosa, the conversation is always this low. It only occasionally rises when punted by someone with a slightly less filthy mind."

<Public> Myles says, "Low? Did you hear that, D?"

<Public> Rosalind says, "Ah, gotcha."

<Public> Myles says, "She said we were low."

<Public> Myles says, "I heard it."

<Public> Reyna says, "I said I was low too, in case you missed it."

<Public> Dagur says, "Yeah. I keep trying to talk about nuclear physics and world peace and they keep dragging it down."

<Public> Woozy Floozy Carmella says, "You're on your backs on the ground looking up skirts."

<Public> Myles says, "If skirts weren't made to be looked up, they'd be closed at the bottom."

Later...

<Public> Reyna says, "I... don't look up skirts. I tried looking up trousers once, but it was so unimpressive I gave it up."

<Public> Myles says, "You were looking up the wrong trousers, then."

<Public> Myles says, "You'd never describe a Hightower as unimpressive."

<Public> Woozy Floozy Carmella says, "Reyna, they're guys. You just have to ask to see the goods and they'll trip over themselves getting the pants off."

<Public> Myles says, "Our symbol is basically a giant stone phallus, for Chrissakes."

<Public> Woozy Floozy Carmella says, "On fire."

<Public> Rosalind thinks they're compensating for something.

<Public> Dagur says, "Hereditary herpes?"

Corrent Gargalen charges into the Western Yard atop his courser, then pulls the mighty beast to an abrupt halt. One of his Goldcloak escorts is unable to make a similar sudden stop, and is thrown to the ground; Corrent laughs derisively at his companion.

Ser Jaesin Lannister, to assorted other onlookers: "Well, well. We've now seen a perfect demonstration of why the Dornishmen lost the war."

"You can truly consider yourself a woman grown now, my lady. In years, if not in body," he remarks with a further grin, as his eyes take their usual tour over her womanly form.

"I've been told all through this week that I'm certainly in more trouble now than I was before. You won't be a bad man and turn such sayings into reality, will you?"

"I seem to have gained a certain repute already around this city and within this court... one that is less well-regarded than a pretty face like mine might usually deserve. A scandal with the much-loved Jewel of the Eyrie would be the LAST thing I need...though, as they say... what a man NEEDS is often far from what he DESIRES."

"That's very true. And most fail in that, I think, acquiring what they desire, because the urgency of acquiring what they need oftentimes trumps it - men are usually practical creatures after all and needs will precede in priority before wants. The more capable ones manage to acquire both however."

"My uncle, Ser Gorian of Salt Shore, once told me that a true huntsman knows the value of patience. It is not a lesson that I take to easily, in truth, but I suppose certain quarries are worth a bit of effort."

"Well then....happy hunting!"

"Come my lady... your thoughts for my success and well-being flatter me, but we could never be together. We would simply fight all the time, then make violent love in reconciliation... only to fight again. Such tempestuous relationships only end in sorrow."

-- Corrent Gargalen to Jyana Arryn

"....buh...I...WHAT? Where in the world did THAT come from?!"

-- Jyana Arryn to Corrent Gargalen, in response to above

The sudden and unexpected touch on her cheek is surprising - gentle, and an odd contrast to his comment on tempestuous relationships and violent lovemaking earlier. She just gapes at his momentary lapse from sanity with wide, surprised eyes, then moves to take the parchment slowly. And once accepted, he leaves her with it.

"......" No words. Jyana looks down at the piece of paper to read the riddle cribbed within.

A strange thing hangs by a man's thigh, hidden by a garment, hanging by the belt.

It has a hole in its head.

It is stiff and strong and its firm bearing reaps a reward, opens a treasure.

When the man hitches his clothing high above his knee and takes up this thing, he wants

the head of it to poke the old hole of fitting length it has often filled before.

The resounding slap of her palm meeting her face echoes in the Royal Library. She whirls around, and yells at his departing back:

"Did you really HAVE to describe an ordinary KEY in such a manner?!!!!"

But he was already gone.

She huffs, blowing a lock of hair from her eyes.

"Augh. MEN."

A laugh. "Then I won't apologize! I should have known that maesters would pick at the circumstances where one is given. Your brethren are so hard to please!"

"In the beginning, there was a great strife among men, because they deemed one another too argumentative about small details. Thus the gods created maesters, that the other men would see pendantic nit-picking in its true form and cease their discord. And from that day men were annoyed at maesters instead of one another, and the gods saw it was good."

"I wish I'd have met you sooner. I'd have someone to converse with who has such an entertaining way of putting things into colorful perspective that I won't have to suffer those whose idea of a scintillating conversation is 'Rocks pretty.' "

"A maester will never tell you 'rocks pretty.' A maester will tell you 'Rocks pretty! Made in heat of earth differently than ugly rock. Ugly rock made with compressed sand. Hurr.' "

-- Jyana Arryn and Maester Talbard

"Shhhh. If the Citadel finds out I have a sense of humor, I'll lose the link in my chain that represents miserable pedantry."

-- Maester Talbard

"Better men than you have bashed themselves against the Jewel's defenses. Best that you look elsewhere, ser."

"Bashed themselves? It is a wonder that knights of Westeros get anywhere when it comes to such things. The trick is to coax the lady to open the gates herself. Besides...the Jewel is but one woman of many."

-- Reyna Saltcliffe vs. Corrent Gargalen

"And if it's laughter you want, I hear Tall Tom the Jester is available. I will speak to Prince Viserys on your behalf by the morrow!"

"You're a mean man, Almer Connington, to pair me with a man even taller than yourself. I'm -already- short! But the truth comes out, I suspected all along - you always meant to call me a midget, but couldn't do so subtly until now! Abuse! Abuse!"

"Oof! It's not -my- fault you could fit in a grown man's pocket!"

-- Almer Connington vs. Jyana Arryn

Ryssa glances away again, down at the jasmine blossom she still holds in her intertwined hands. "He should be from a good family, of course," she begins, with the smooth cadence of words learned long ago and spoken many times. "Brave - a good knight, honorable and chivalrous. Kind and compassionate. And intelligent - I could not imagine a husband I could not have a complex conversation with."

-- Ryssa Waters, on the qualities of a good husband-to-be

"So. Kind and compassionate, hm?" the Jewel teases, an impish glint to her eyes. "Huh. So that means that the mean ones are out. And that eliminates....what, -all- the men of my acquaintance?" She spins around again, vaulting to the top of the bench, and spreads her arms out to face the setting sun in a mock air of victory. "Hoorah! I'm SAVED!"

-- Jyana Arryn, responding to Ryssa

"I trust you realize that even the Father Above, to whom you seem to be uttering those prayers to with such devotion, can't make me disappear instantaneously. Your nose has a delightful habit of wrinkling when you concentrate ever so piously. It's fascinating."

"I'm not praying for the Father to send you away. I'm praying out of the goodness of my heart and soul for him to have mercy upon you and prolong your life the best he can at the rate you're going."

"Maester Talbard, running away from the Grand Maester today?"

"I would never run away, m'lady. I would walk away in a brisk, but un-suspicious pace under some pretense of some other errand he already had cause to send me on. ......and I would volunteer Maester Gram for whatever else needed doing. But such deviousness is purely hypothetical."

"Why should I do -you- any favors?" Jyana shoots back, riled and incensed. She spins around, her skirts fluttering about her and jabs a finger in his direction. "You've -clearly- done your absolute best to offend me, though I could hardly see a reason why, other than the fact perhaps that I'm Westerosi and the man laying to waste your lands is my king! You throw ribald comments in my direction, you speak ill of the seeming lack of regard that I supposedly have for my father. You look at me like...like....like a piece of prime cut hanging from a butcher's window, and I bore it all! -Patiently-! Because somehow I know somewhere deep down that you're not a bad person! What was it, did you just want to see what it would be like to get me angry?! Well, there you have it! I'm angry! Furious! Completely and utterly MAD with RAGE! Congratulations! We can toss the grain in the air and call it a day!"

-- Jyana Arryn vs. Corrent Gargalen, Round 7

"I am no stranger to hard truths. You are who you are. I am a Dornishman, a hostage of war. What I take from you, can never truly be mine by rights. And it may very well be the death of me, to indulge myself so freely and so carelessly like the sweet fool that I am... but I would be a liar too, if I were to claim that I will never indulge myself again. I -WILL- have you, my lady, and if it cost me my life or health or freedom, I will consider it a price well paid."

Well, this is OOC, but a few OOC quotes have popped up so I thought I'd throw this one in.

Note: At this point Triston is struggling to clean some off some dog crap.

<Public> Almer says, "Reyna needs to carry a pooper-scooper for Thorn."

<Public> Reyna says, "Who says that was Thorn?"

<Public> Almer says, "Then Kellyn needs one for Jonn."
