Arbor Gold
So how does this thread work? Are unaired episodes fair game? That would really suck.
boiled leather
Hopefully, everyone has seen the "mini-prequels". I saw them on Amazon attached to the season 4 box set. Loved the one on Proposition Joe, who might have the best name on TV.
Mathis
I've always hated the opening credits of The Wire. It goes on too long and I hate the song no matter who is singing it. This series is the worst of them all. SPOILER: Series 5 Episode 2 Jimmy McNulty has lost his fucking mind. This can not end well. So what is he thinking? Does he plan to draw national attention to Baltiomore by manufacturing a serial killer? Thats nuts. People will notice that the 'victims' are cases worked by Jimmy McNulty. Did anyone else really love the scene where Avon finally gets to talk to Marlo? Though I'm surprised that Avon was willing to play ball. All that bullshit about West Side sticking together seems out of character for Avon. I wouldn't have thought he would be so forgiving. He talked about his sister receiving $100,000, but I assumed he was a millionaire several times over. The Barksdales were bringing in thousands of dollars every day during the gang's heyday. Avon and Stringer owned all that property. Does he or his sister really need the money that badly, or is he genuinely interested in taking Prop. Joe down? I'm glad that Michael has reservations about his work. Maybe there's hope for him yet. Carcetti continues to be as scumbag. He dropped the Police Department in shit just to serve his own ambitions. I hope he fails. The newspaper storyline is interesting but I'm finding myself impatient whenever the newsroom is shown. Its good but I'm far more interested in the other storylines (though I did enjoy the scenes where that lying reporter was trying to find an interesting Orioles fan and he met that guy who hates baseball since the drug scandals. 'Fuck Baseball!'). Same goes for Bubbles, he's ok but gets too much screen time IMO. Still no Cutty or Bunny. It looks like their storyarcs are finished. Omar is yet to make an appearance but I think its only a matter of time. Marlo is planning something to draw him out. The only thing I can think of is that Marlo will kill Butchie. That will put Omar on the warpath which is what Marlo seems to want. Speaking of Marlo, what does he hope to achieve by meeting with the Greeks? He wants to cut the new day Co-op out of the high quality heroin by why would the Greeks go for it? By supplying Marlo, who only controls the West Side, they will lose all their custom in the East side. This series only has ten episodes, right? They seem to have compensated for this by making each episode longer than in previous series. Did series 1-4 have episodes an hour long?
Third Knight on the Left
SPOILER: RE: MathisAh, but is the Eastside going to be viable much longer. Remember what was said in the Coop meeting.
Mathis
SPOILER: RE: Third KnightI don't know about the logistics of the drug trade in Baltimore, but in series two when Prop. Joe and Stringer did a deal about sharing everything we learned that there was more custom in West Baltimore than East. 'All the dope fiends be crossing town' or something like that. There were a lot of drug dealers in the latest co-op meeting and only a few were identified as having problems. Presumably there were other East-side dealers there who were doing ok. Or maybe the West side is much more profitable than the East side. Do you see Marlo working with the other West-siders on an equal footing if he controls the supply of the pure heroin, like Prop. Joe is doing for the co-op? Marlo took a run at the Greeks before and they made it clear that they worked with Joe. Why would they drop the whole co-op for Marlo? Flayed Man
Don't want to watch it on On Demand because I've never figured out how to get On Demand to display in HD, but just wanted to pop in here to say that NPR's critic went on the record as calling this season the best of the series. If true:

If true: I heard that too!! And big thanks to everyone adding the spoiler tags to this thread. Although I'm not sure how we should proceed...two separate threads, one for the broadcast people and one for the On Demand/download people? Am I overcomplicating things? H von T
SPOILER: Mathis ep2I can see why Avon would work with Marlo. IMO Avon respects Marlo as a gangster, which is what Avon is. Avon's from the westside and that means something to him. He resented Stringer letting Prop Joe's people have the towers and originally brought in Brother Mouzone to run off the eastsiders. There was also the basketball game in season 1, which is just a little example of the eastside v. westside rivalry. The Barksdale clan probably needs the money, too. They had to support Namond and his mom and probably have more people just like them to support. I'm sure Avon's sister doesn't work. I like the newspaper story as well. All the newspaper jargon is pretty cool. It's a totally new world for me. I want to comment on Michael, but I downloaded episodes 5,6, and 7 so I'm slightly spoiled. I haven't watched them yet, but I've seen small bits and still pictures. Something big happens in episode 3 or 4 and I'm dying to find out what. I think we'll see Cutty again, but not Colvin. Sauvino, the guy who went to jail when Kima got shot, reappears.
Mathis
Are episodes 3 and 4 likely to be leaked? I've read on some forum that only episodes 1,2,5,6,7 were given to critics and thats why we're missing 3 and 4. But then someone in this thread said that an NPR critic has seen the whole series. So whats going on?
H von T
Are episodes 3 and 4 likely to be leaked? I've read on some forum that only episodes 1,2,5,6,7 were given to critics and thats why we're missing 3 and 4. But then someone in this thread said that an NPR critic has seen the whole series. So whats going on? I'm not sure. I've been hunting for eps. 3 & 4, but can't find them anywhere. From what I've read the first 7 episodes were sent out for review, but no one has posted 3 or 4 on the web. HBO is also telling websites to pull episodes pretty quickly. The sites I downloaded 2, 5, 6, and 7 have removed the episodes. I'm afraid we'll have to wait a couple of weeks until they air On Demand.
Mathis
I couldn't resist and so I just watched episode 5. SPOILER: Episode 5 with spoilers from 3 and 4 So Prop. Joe and (I assume) Cheese is dead. I haven't seen episodes 3 and 4 but it looks as though Marlo had them killed and has made a deal with the Greeks. Who knows where or what Slim Charles is doing? Omar has been brought out into the open, I don't know how. I assume Butchie has been murdered by Chris (who has a family, who'd have thought). I knew Omar's accomplice was gonna die when we saw the trap set up but I assumed Omar would shoot his way out...instead he jumped off a balcony. Where the fuck has he gone? There is no way that he is dead IMO. Not in episode 5. No way. It looks as though McNulty has brought Lester into his bullshit about the serial killer. I suppose it makes sense as a way to nail Marlo but its pretty far out there. Lester has a history of going against the grain so its not too far out of character. I would love to see the scene where McNulty clues him in/Lester works it out. I'm really starting to hate that scumbag reporter, is his name Scott? He inadvertantly helped McNulty but FFS, what a tosser. Surely Gus will untangle his bullshit lies. I hope so. I loved the scenes between Cutty and Dookie. I hope Dookie gets out of the drug trade. Also loved that Kenard got another smack to the face. I know he is a child but in fiction land he had it coming. Also the way Michael and Cutty sized each other up. Surely, if anyone, Cutty can be the one to save Michael. Bubbles got a lot of screen time again (relatively). Remind me, is Bubbles' sponser HIV positive or not? Clay is going down. This episode featured what was probably the longest 'shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit' in television history. Daniels is Deputy Opps. Burrell is gone, does that mean Rawls is Commisioner or not? I wish I could watch episodes 3 and 4. As for Daniels, even with the budget as tight as it is I assumed he would be able to comandeer more men to a wiretap that just the Serial Killer personnel. Will the writers ever follow up on Daniels' supposed shady past in the East side district and Rawls' homosexuality. I hope not. It would be kind of like The Sopranos never going back to the Russian in the Pine Barrens episode. I glad that Herc can finally redeem himself somewhat. I think Carver should have told Lester where he got his tip from. It couldn't hurt. How did Levy and Marlo team up? Maybe Avon actually believes in all that bs about West side sticking together and set Marlo up with Levy. WTF was that encrypted telephone call at the end of the episode? Lester didn't seem to know what was going on. Same here... So what do people think of the new credits? I hate them. HBO shows usually have awesome openings. Not the Wire. Flayed Man
The lost last scene of the series. :lol "We a drunkass pair of meta motherfuckers right now" must be among the best lines ever put to paper.
Relic
Flayed, as far as this being the best season yet... after two episodes i just dont see it yet. Arbor - lets just continue using spoiler tags and a header for which episode you are going to spoil until such a time where its a safe assumption that everyone in the thread has seen the earlier episodes of the season. ztemhead
anyone else think marlo stanfield or striger bell (may he rest in peace) would do one fuck of a better job running the city than Carcetti is?
Commodore
SPOILER: episode 1 & 2I'm not entirely convinced that Avon isn't playing Marlo. Marlo's crew took a shot at him for heaven's sake, no way he lives that down. The season 5 trailer has a scene with Marlo in jail I think, so my guess is that Avon is setting him up to get caught somehow. It's pretty clear that McNulty willing to lie and the reporter willing to lie are going to cross paths soon for their own mutual interests, with catastrophic results. ztemhead
Don't want to watch it on On Demand because I've never figured out how to get On Demand to display in HD, but just wanted to pop in here to say that NPR's critic went on the record as calling this season the best of the series. If true: which critic, Flayed? I heard Teri Gross do an episode on it on her show, which was why I started watching in the first place, and then the guy on Marketplace say it is a very astute show economic wise, but I haven't heard any straight up reviews on NPR yet. Winterfell
Well, episode 1 (or 51) just aired a while ago. I definitely enjoyed it, particularly SPOILER: episode 1 "Greenhouse Gas" and Sergei. I'm glad to see the port story will get more attention. I also love the fact that we see Reginald back in his sister's house again. And wow, if you didn't hate Herc after season 4, he is one slimy mofo going to work for Levy. It would be difficult to imagine any of the other Major Crimes officers pulling that move. Commodore
SPOILER: episode 1Maybe I missed something. Could someone explain how Marlo's crew knew to look for Sergei at the courthouse?
H von T
SPOILER: Commodore In season 4 Prop Joe told Marlo about how he could go down to the courthouse and look at files of police cases after they've been adjudicated. This was when he was trying to convince Marlo to join the co-op. Marlo may have heard from Joe about Sergei and decided to look him up. At least that's my guess.
