When half the books mentioned in the 2008 thread today are coming out in 2009? It might be time to change the thread. Or just start a new one.

In no particualr order and releases all tentative of course.

Corambis by Sarah Monette (fourth and finale to her Labyrinth series)
Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs (Mercy Thompson goes hardcover)
The Godstalker Chronicles by P. C. Hodgell (re-issue omnibus now Baen is publishing her work. A great way to discover a neglected author)
The Steel Remains by Richard K. Morgan. (U.S. release by Del Rey scheduled for March)
The Gears of the City by Felix Gilman (sequel to Thunderer and likely out this Christmas)
Flight into Darkness by Sarah Ash (second in new series)
The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch
Palimpsest by Catherynne M. Valente
Regenesis by C. J. Cherryh (long awaited sequel to Cyteen)
Foxfire by Barbara Campbell (third in Trickster's Game series)
Wings of Wrath by C. S. Friedman (second in Magisters series)
A Magic of Nightfall by S. L. Farrell (second in Nessantico Cycle)
The Sharing Knife: Horizons by Lois McMaster Bujold (fourth in series)
Fool by Christopher Moore
Drood by Dan Simmons
City Without End by Kay Kenyon (third in The Entire and the Rose Quartet)
The Horseman's Gambit by David B. Coe (second in new series)
Neuropath by (R.) Scott Bakker (U.S. hardcover release)
By Heresies Distressed by David Weber (third book in series)
The Judging Eye by R. Scott Bakker (first in new sequel series)
The Grave Thief by Tom Lloyd (book three)
The Third God by Ricardo Pinto (long awaited book three of The Stone Dance of the Chameleon.

These are the ones I'm interested in, but I'm sure there will be many others as well - including Charlie Huston's final Joe Pitt book and ADwD. I think it may be a bit too early but I'm sure others will disagree ;).

Jeff VanderMeer, Finch (I believe 2009 is the scheduled release date)

Is China MiƩville's upcoming novel still late 2008, or has it been pushed back to 2009 yet?

Tobias Buckell might have a fourth interconnected novel out by then, considering his recent pace.

I'm hoping that the sequel to Emma Bull's Territory will be out in 2009, not to mention I'd love for there to be more José Saramago...in Portuguese/Spanish. I don't wait for the English translations anymore, plus I thought Zafón's latest book was well worth the read in the original Spanish. It'll be interesting who'll love it more than La Sombra and who'll hate it for being a bit different story.

The Judging Eye by R. Scott Bakker

A Dance with Dragons by GRRM :(

Dust of Dreams by Steven Erikson (seems sure bet)

Cyteen II: Regenesis by C. J. Cherryh

The Gears of The City by Felix Gilman (sequel to Thunderer )

Wings of Wrath by C. S. Friedman

Lamentation by Ken Scholes

Drood by Dan Simmons

Palimpsest by Catherynne Valente

This Is not a Game by Walter Jon Williams

The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch

And doubtless many more

New China Mieville book was apparently postponed to 2010:

The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch
The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss
Turn Coat by Jim Butcher
Dust of Dreams by Steven Erikson

I would have added A Dance with Dragons but I have this sinking feeling its not gonna be out til 2010 at the latest.

Might surprise you REG, but the Charlie Huston book is slated for a September 30th, 2008 release. From Huston's site:

Quote

This year, the new Joe Pitt, EVERY LAST DROP, will release on September 30th, and my next crime novel, THE MYSTIC ARTS OF ERASING ALL SIGNS OF DEATH, will come out on a TBA date in the winter months of early 2009.

Good news for you Americans, you get the book way earlier than Christmas!

edit: I can't read -- now I realize what you alluded to. :/

Well, of those mentioned, the following are what I know I'm looking forward to...

The Steel Remains by Richard K. Morgan. (U.S. release by Del Rey scheduled for March)
The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch
Wings of Wrath by C. S. Friedman (second in Magisters series)
A Magic of Nightfall by S. L. Farrell (second in Nessantico Cycle)
The Judging Eye by R. Scott Bakker (first in new sequel series)
The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss (second book in series)
Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie
Dust of Dreams by Steven Erikson

Of course my experience is the best of the year are books I rarely know about more than a month or two in advance and often even less.

In addition to many of the others on the list, I would be pretty happy if that book comes out in 2009. Territory was very enjoyable. :)

What about A Memory of Light? I see the first draft is 25% done. Any chance this is out in the last 3 months of 2009, or is it supposed to be sometime in 2010?

If Sanderson produces the manuscript on time and it doesn't require an unusual amount of editing, then we can expect AMOL in fall 2009. Right now things seem to be progressing well and that schedule should be met.

I'm pretty sure that by 'final' he meant the fifth book in the series and not the fourth one that is being released in 2008. Since Huston has been cranking these out at a book-a-year pace, I've been expecting #5 in 2009.

Great list gyrehead. Time for me to buy another bookcase in anticipation.

I'll throw out The Bastards and the Knives by Scott Lynch and a potential new Ted Chiang novella about A.I. (although there's no date whatsoever on this one).

my understanding is that it will, though I haven't seen it officially. Actually a comment made by Bakker indicated that it may actually come out in late 2008.

Only if he finishes it by then and we all know how good he at meeting deadlines. I give it less than a 50% chance of being published by then.

Spellbinder II by Melanie Rawn is done and looks to be set for early 2009
Wildroad by Jennifer Roberson got pushed back to 2009 now I believe
C. J. Cherryh's next Foreigner sequence book may be out by the end of 2009 since Cyteen II has been done for awhile and is coming out the beginning of the year.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Deas can do. The next fantasy author out of the Jarrold agency that hopes to hit it big apparently.

No word on whether Joshua Palmatier's next series will be ready to start in 2009, but it is a possiblity.

Jacqueline Carey's vampire book, Santa Olivia is likely to come out in early 2009 possibly under the pseudonym, Madelon Easton. But possibly not as Grand Central likely does not want her fans to overlook the book since the first in the next series set in the Kushiel world probably wouldn't be ready until 2010.

Forgot about The Price of Spring by Daniel Abraham. With yet another beautiful cover.

I think Tad Williams' third Shadowmarch book is on schedule for a 2009 release.

Sara Gruen in non-genre has her next book out following her fabulous Water for Elephants.

Max Barry might end up having a book but it looks grim. And I heard that David Mitchell might have something for release in 2009.

Laura Resnick has changed the focus in which the Sirkara series is going to go and next book, The Palace of Heaven might see release in the Fall of next year. Arena now being the projected fifth book.

Traitor's Honor the fourth Inda book by Sherwood Smith may also make 2009 release.

Traitor's Gate by Kate Elliott third in Crossroads series.

Green by Jay Lake

Rainlords of the Scarpen by Glenda Larke

Straws in the Wind by Juliet McKenna

Other new authors I know nothing about

The Painted Man by Peter Brett -- fantasy

Dragon in Chains by Daniel Fox
