Jodelle Ferland looks more Arya-ish than most of the other suggestions, IMO.

eta: She might be too old, depending on how they fiddle the characters' ages.

Not bad - she has the long face that would fit the "horse-face" insults.

I'd love Sean to be Ned - but it would be yet another role that would kill him off,

Messing might be a little young for Cat - I always saw Connie Nielsen in the role, but she might be too expensive.

David McCallum as Maester Luwin.

Hi everyone, my first post here so I hope I got all the links to work :)

Ned Stark: These suggestions are the right age and have the tall, dark, somber look I imagine is needed for Ned. They're all good actors too.

Anthony Howell- from Foyle's War, lots of theater experience, great voice.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0397928/

Matthew Macfadyen- RADA trained, versatile actor, great voice too.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0532193/

Jon Hamm- from tv's Mad Men
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0358316/

Peter Hermann
- Has done mostly tv work in US. Played Miranda Otto's husband in tv's Cashmere Mafia. They were practicing playing Cat and Ned, they just didn't know it at the time! ;)
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0379282/

Catelyn Stark: I think these actresses have the right look and talent to pull it off.

Miranda Otto- of LoTR
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001584/

Gillian Anderson-she was good in Bleak House
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000096/

Honeysuckle Weeks-from Foyle's War
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0917320/

Maester Luwin:
Michael Kitchen - The right age and height. Excellent, classically trained actor.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0457655/

(Can you tell? I just watched Foyle's War on DVD and thought the main actors were all very good and had the right look for ASoIaF as well. lol)

I don't know 'bout you, but I suddenly keep seeing Garret Dillahunt (who I think might be one of the best actors working right now, anywhere), as Ned...he's got a haunting aspect to him sometimes that would lend well to Benjen too, I think (if Benjen turns out to be who I think he is) - but Benjen isn't a big enough role for an actor of Dillahunt's calibur.

He's of course already an HBO regular, having played two different amazing roles on DEADWOOD: both Jack McCall (Wild Bill Hickock's lunatic-creep nemesis) and Francis Wolcott (Hearst's evil advance man), two roles that were nothing alike. He then played Dr. Michael Smith on JOHN FROM CINCINNATI and now is on THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES playing Cromartie.

OR Casper Van Dein As Eddard. Look at the pics with his beard! Its Perfect!

I think we want someone who can act, too.

Assuming she speaks English well enough:
Ivana Baquero as Arya
She was brilliant in Pan's Labyrinth.

Her character in Pan's Labyrinth actually reminded me of Arya. :)

Catelyn - Molly Parker - ie Alma Garrett from Deadwood. She fluctuates well between being a warm and friendly lover, a caring mother, and an irrational harpy. She also looks great in period dress.

Since I think we're doing the entire Stark household here:

Maester Luwin - Pete Postlethwaite - I think Postlethwaite could do this in his sleep.

Brilliant, especially Maester Luwin!

My picks:

Polly Hunter or Anna Gunn as Catelyn Stark:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0908116/
http://www.imdb.com/...80000/nm0348152 (Anna could be Cersei, too, come to think of it: http://www.imdb.com/...01568/nm0348152 )

Kiefer Sutherland as Eddard Stark: dark, somber, perfect voice!
http://www.imdb.com/...43936/nm0000662

Christina Robinson as either Arya Stark or Sansa Stark: (a bit pretty for Arya, but she looks mischievous enough)
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2247732/

Daniel Goldman or Preston Bailey as Bran Stark:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2288060/
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2259079/

The notion had crossed my mind too, but he won't come cheap. Still, it might be ideal to have a bigger name actor in that particular role for a number of reasons.

Yes, I'm aware he'll be expensive but Ned will be one of the main roles of season 1 at least.

But I just had a great idea for Eddard Stark: Simon Templeman! He is a British theatre actor, has the coolest voice ever, can do the quiet nobleman very well, and with just a bit of help he could look the part. He's surely nowhere near as expensive as Sutherland either.

Oh, Templeman needs to be cast in there somewhere. :(

thank you me and a friend of mine had a big argument about that. I knew they were the same actor. and if he is good enough to play two different rolls in the same show and people not only not notice but deny it when told. he must be a good actor

The fact that he was a lead on Rome, and played a somewhat similar character to boot, may make this very unlikely, but personally I think Kevin McKidd would be a great Eddard Stark.

Heh. he was my first thought too, as I just posted in the 'discussion' thread.

I think Nicholas Hoult would make a very good Jon Snow

He was in About a Boy and most recently Skins on UK television. I heard from an interview that he's currently in America for castings...

Nicholas Hoult

An actor I've always been impressed with and I think has a great look for Eddard is Jeffrey Dean Morgan. http://www.imdb.com/...93344/nm0604747 although since he's got a pretty big role in the Watchmen comming out soon maybe he's to expensive now.

I'm surprised that there are so few suggestions for Lyanna... she isn't in the book in the present... but I am hopeful for a flashback to the Tower of Joy and the Tourney at Harrenhal--

Whenever i picture Lyanna I see Odette Yustman

She is just the right combination of spunky and refined... and her guest spot on Life on Mars a few weeks ago was great!!

Since it's just a quick cameo role, I'd love to see Summer Glau as Lyanna. I think she's really got the unconventional beauty look down just right.
