There is some extensive discussion on the pros and cons of the MBoTF here and here. Like Sir Slack, I love Malazan, but it's one of those series that divides opinion - so you'll just have to try it for yourself to make up your mind.

Its take a little bit to get into Gardens starts off kinda slow, and the story structure is a little bit odd, but after a hundred pages or so theres no turning back. Its a were engrossing story taking place in a beautifully written world, theres jsut soemthign about it, that I cant stop reading. I finished toll the hounds this week (most recent book) and now am awaiting for all the novellas / side novels to arrive which I just picked up off amazon. though I will say with malazan you either love it, or you hate it.

General consensus is when you start, give it to at least about 200-250 pages in before you make any judgements, as you're basically desperately trying to keep your head above water with all the new stuff till then. After that people seem to agree that it's a bit more coherent.

And whatever else you say about Erikson, the man writes an awesome finale like no-one else.

I didn't finish the series, just the first two books, but Erikson writes great actions scenes. I found the world itself to be a little hard to imagine/follow.
Don't understand why is here so many people who hate this books ;)
Lack of consistency, rampant power-uping, unlikable copy pasted characters, bloody melodrama, unbelievable behaviours, 3/4 of each book deserving to be edited, author obfuscating everything for the sake of stringing the reader along, world you don't even care about, superpowers, superpowers, superpowers, warren unto himself, witness, wow this grunt killed alone an immortal horror this ancient order of super being got decimated by, look at me I'm the Eres ex machina...

Having said that, I managed to last halfway through reaper's gale, and from what I read here or there, and despite what is commonly argued, Malazan's argued complexity is neither what it's cracked up to be nor the reason most people stop reading. First ones are enjoyable in a forgotten realms kind of way.

ETA: :P

Malazan is for you if you like big, huge, complex, war-centered, gritty epics with a vast cast and a vast backstory in all the shades of gray and a lot of high-powered magic flying around from every direction. RPG-style, even normal humans can rise to awesome levels in their chosen character classes (if you want to put it like that) since they're just that awesome, even to the point of occasionally becoming gods or beating gods up. They can be very thoughtful books though (you can see the author is an archeologist, which is very much unlike Forgotten Realms), and range from comedy to tragedy (mostly tragedy). The combination of elements is actually rather unique as far as I know. The biggest negative is that the editing could indeed have been better.
