[Triskele]

Triskele is looking to go on a revamp of the wardrobe that is long overdue, shoes included.  I have some dressier stuff like black Bostonians and Dr. Martins that have been mentioned as well as brown Timberlands (with Gortex, invincible).

I am not too naturally stylish though and I need some recs on casual shoes for comfort when I'm just rolling around in jeans and a t-shirt.

Shoes are like jewelry for your feet. When you have the right pair on it can just make you feel so good, and can pull together an outfit. That said I'm not a shoe whore, or a bag hag, my drug of choice is coats, I have closet full.

I don't like wearing shoes at all...or carrying purses and I rarely wear any jewelry.  I think I am just missing a girly gene somewhere.

Nothing wrong with that, I don't think girly= feminine. There is no right/ wrong way to be a woman, or to express you femininity.

Coats.... mmmmmm.... I love coats. Good thing I live in a climate that supports my habit. It just *kills* me when it is  ten below and snowing beacause I am forced to wear my ugly-as-shit L.L.Bean   parka.  No, neither of us were happy to be outside that day. You can just feel the wind ripping through you in the  picture.

Sorry, that picture does make me want to turn the feet up. But you coat isn't that bad. I have a down coat that makes that one look damn fashionable.  That said the coat I am currently drooling over is this one http://www.stylehive...n-Violet-574351 unforunatly it is sold out!

They have it in black, but damn it I want it in violet!  I sent Modcloth an email begging them to restock, it sold out very quickly, I hope they are heartened to get more.

Actually, I'm the same about shoes. I can't see spending over $80 for a pair of shoes, and even *that* is a little rich for my blood (thus I loathe it when my favorite shoes are 'trendy' and they go from being $25 to being $55).  Needless to say I was *Royally* ticked when I had to spend $100 for 'the exact' shoes my SiL wants all us bridesmaids to wear. $100 for a pair of ugly shoes I'll *never* *ever* wear again (they'll probably be exchanged for my red chucks during the reception!). Those heels will be on craigslist 9/9/09.

As for the jewelry anology, but it doesn't help. The only jewelry I wear is my wedding ring.

Oooh...that's not acceptable. At all. $100??? Nobody needs to spend that kind of money on a pair of shoes you're going to wear once. You can always get cheap black, white, silver or gold evening shoes at Target for, like, $25, which is the way to go for that kind of situation, IMO.

HI Triskele. For casual attire in Oregon (your place, right?)  you could try shoes by Simple or Camper

You'll score big points with their eco-friendliness, plus, they are pretty comfortable and have a fun, young, casual style.  They  work great with jeans and a tee-shirt.  I guess it's kind of hard to make style recommendations for someone you've never met, but I think you may be pleasantly surprised by the options of these brands. Isn't it funny how you kind of get an image of a person just through their posts? I don't know how this happens. For me it's one of the weirder aspects of Board dynamics.

Anyway, Simple is probably less expensive than Camper, if that's a concern. Let me know if you check them out and what you think. Am I totally off?

I used to not get the shoe thing, but I'm seeing that having a few pairs of quality albeit expensive shoes is better than going through several pairs of cheap shoes every year. And if I'm paying good money for shoes, I'd better really like them.

I want to get my shoe collection to the point where I don't have to think about it anymore. I spend too much time thinking about the kinds of shoes I should have. Like I have no black professional pumps, what's with that? I need to just suck up the cost and get all the kinds of shoes that I would wear regularly and be done with it.

If you were making a list of *essential* shoes, what would be on it?

I have the "business casual" pumps in brown and black.  Bought them when I was teaching and had to stand all day, so they are very comfortable, but not really narrow enough to be "stylish"  They are the most expensive shoes I have ever owned ($65 each)

I have a very nice dressy/sexy black heel, a 4 inch sling back

A dressier pair of brown pumps (3"heel), several pairs of sandles (brown, black, white) a pair of brown boots and a pair of black ones (the black ones were a gift and might have cost more than my shoes)

Of course my tennies (two pair---older ones for yard work and such, newer ones for wearing out)


That is my esential list.  Not as lavish as many, but I wear business casual every day, and don't go to "formal" occasions.

The trouble is, you can have dress flats that you wear to the office or casual flats that you wear with jeans. It's very hard to compose a list of essentails, but htist is what I would say... for work only.

Tall black boots (all leather only, I *HATE* that synthetic stuff they try to pass off on the calves)
Tall brown boots (all leather only, chocolate brown)
Black pumps
Brown pumps
Black flats
Brown Flats
Snow boots.... you can't walk around outside in your "good" shoes unless you keep shoe polish at your desk.

I really don't much care for ankle boots.  I loathe navy, so I've never worn a pair of navy shoes in my life. I have ugly feet, so I don't wear sandals.

Edit: forgot work out shoes. I swim, so that does not require shoes. In the summer I bike. I wear biking shoes or my Keens for that.

A couple pairs of comfortable pumps or flats in neutral shades and colors; basically some shoes that don't kill your feet and go with most of you clothes.

At least one sexy pair of red or jewel toned heels. Having shoes that are exciting colors can be a wonderful way to make an outfit more interesting.

Some might disagree with me but I think also having a pair of metallic heels is nice. I have some bronze heels that go remarkably well with most outfits.

At least one pair of boots that you would willing to get in a fist fight over.

A couple pairs of good work out shoes, go to a running store and they can help you (through advanced machinery) pick out shoes that sublimely comfortable.

I'm sure there’s more, but my mind is going blank.

Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees this. I even spent a whole day surfing the web finding close knock-offs for about half that. She wouldn't budge. She *had* to have the shoes that were shown on-line with the $200 dresses we had to buy (again, another thing I never spend more than $80 on!!).

Next time someone asks me to be in their wedding, I will tell them 'no, I am too poor.'

Ep - InStyle's suggested list of work shoes:

Ballerina flats (for cropped pants or full skirts)
Pointed toe flats (for skirts and skinny pants)
Knee high boots (knee lengths skirts)
Black pumps (pencil skirts, suits, everything)
Kitten heels (all business casual work clothes)

I also think it's a good idea to have some shoes with a wider or stacked heel for wide-leg or boot-cut work pants, like stacked heel pumps or ankle boots.

I am also lacking black pumps - how did that happen? I've been looking for a great pair on sale for a long time, but unfortunately they're the kind of basic shoe that just doesn't seem to go on sale much. I don't have any pointed toe flats either, but I really only wear flats casually with pants, since I have really unsightly wide ankles that should only been seen outside of pants in a 3-4 inch heel. :)

When I was in a wedding in December I had to pay $200 for the dress. Then because she had to have them made in Hawaii by a family friend in I spent another $40 getting it altered once they arrived. Then I had to spend $65 dollars on shoes. Not to mention $800 for airfare to Hawaii where the wedding was. Along with the bachelorette party (which I got roped in to planning and fronting the money for even though I wasn’t the maid of honor; which not everyone paid me back for) in all I spent almost $1500 on my friend's wedding. If I had to do it over again I don't think I would.  I would just congratulate her, buy her a nice present and be done with it.

I understand the dress more than the shoes - the shoes are not a really big factor in your pictures/vision for your wedding or whatever, you know? I especially hate the dye-to-match shoes.
