DISCUSS: Advancement

We've had XP and SP given out for a while now, and it has also been possible to spend the points. How has it been working? Are there any changes or additions you'd like to see?

In particular, we would love to see some suggestions for more ways of using Story Points. Current usage includes affecting the IC outcome of a scene or an event (such as improving your chances in a tourney) and purchasing a byname. SP will also be needed to advance your tier when/if we figure out how to do that.

Other comments, questions and suggestions relating to any aspect of the Advancement system are also very welcome.

Dunno if this is a good idea but a specific topic on this forum where players can post certain shortstories about their characters.

Pro

- 'Self-education': Even when there's no one on the Mush to rp, you're able to rp. Handy for when you're new to your character. People will be learning to know their character quicker ( and therefor rp it better.)

- 'Behind the curtain': Short stories which go deeper into certain 'revolutions' within the info of the character. For example: Character X is supposed to be haughty among people of low birth => Shortstory of how the character behaves with the servants/people of his own household. Character Y's father died => Shortstory of how he acted upon hearing the news.

- 'The more rp the better' ;)

Contra

- Shortstories on forum isn't exactly MUSH....

( P.S. I assume there are alot of Pro's and Contra's i'm not comming up with atm ;))

While GRRM is fine with roleplaying in his setting, he does not allow or approve of fan fiction and writing stories about characters would cross over from roleplaying to fan fiction. :)

I've got an idea for a new usage of SP.

The way things currently are with squires, (and wards, etc: any other characters that are attached to a player, but are also considered "Open"), is that while able to RP having the squire, one cannot RP as though it was your second character, which is absolutely fine. It allows players to enrich their backgrounds, and surround them with the entourages that are appropriate for the theme, without giving them access to a whole new character as a venue of play.

The problem that this leaves open is that, while the players have no right to establish a background, etc, for such squires, it is nearly impossible to play them purely as background. They'll interact with someone at some point, and a personality will develop. Not to mention that as squires, they have such close ties with the knights that teach them daily and likely allow them to live in their homes, and therefore have a much closer relationship with their mentor knight than most other characters will have with that knight. Which is fine, except that they're "Open". There's always the potential for someone to come in, and write a back story that's not consistent with the way you've seen the relationship, or conflicts with the way your knight would have raised the squire, and any other number of minor problems. New players come, they see a character that interests them, and they come up with back stories that they want played out...and that's not a bad thing, at all! It's how games expand, and we're in a time of expansion. But since the character is not CG'd, the first player has no right to contest them, despite what it would mean to the established character.

My suggestion is fairly simple. Allow players who have had a decent amount of time with an "Open" character attached to them to spend an SP to CG the character, with the caveat that the character is still "Open", on the roster, and still not to be used as a second character for the player. This solves the issue of there being any grey zone that the aforementioned conflicts typically arise in. Instead the relationship between players wouldn't be any different than that between two folks who've played the same character, and we have that in this game already. Plus, the trend for the new people recently has been to take characters that have already been through CG, so this adds another character to that pool, and makes them even more likely to be picked up.

How does that sound?
