Wise Man's Fear [SPOILERS!]

Hi everybody!

So I just finished Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind. I realize the sequel isn't out yet - but does anyone have any news on when it might be out? The only thing I could find was a Borders book estimated release date. Being a Martin fan makes me wary of 'estimated release dates'.

Thanks in advance!

According to Werthead in the 2010 thread:

After expressing some optimism last month, Gollancz are back to not really discussing Lynch, so we're back to not knowing about that one. Rothfuss I am quite optimistic about though, since at least the thing is turned in. Unless there are severe rewrites needed (and the reading I heard was very strong, possibly stronger than anything in Book 1), first half of 2010 looks very doable.

From what I gleaned at Pat's blog recently, the draft turned in may still need some work and Daw still isn't speaking of a release date. But, I think that the first half of 2010 is still very likely.

Ah, not really, Ken. . .

The fact that the tentative spring 2010 pub date has been replaced by a "the book won't be published until it is close to perfection" pub date seems to indicate that it will likely take a while. My guess at the moment would be a late 2010 release date.

We'll have to wait and see. . .

Glad I double checked...I'm looking to spend some birthday swag and the Borders site has WMF as the number two pre-order right now in the SFF section. With it still having an August 30, 2009 release date...

Stab their eyes. :P

I'm about 50 pages from finishing NofW too. Fine book, though the end story arc kind of came out of nowhere....

/goes to find the Rothfuss thread he's been avoiding for years

Since we haven't seen any real announcment, I think those dates are most likely placeholders. Notice how far out they are - I imagine that Daw has hopes for sooner than that. But, it's clear that the book isn't ready yet.

His last blog post on the topic was despondent. He's still working on it, despite having handed in that first main draft a couple of months back, he's holding a contest in which people who donate money for a good cause can be written into the story...

Those dates are placeholders yes, but at the same time, it's not looking good for a release anytime "soon".

Rothfuss has a case of Martinitis? :P In all seriousness, I really am looking forward to this book and follow Pat's blog quite regularly for details about it's release. Unfortunately, it looks like the book is well off being published. I wouldn't expect it next year.

How awful was that first draft if the book won't be out for another year and a half? WTF!

At least with Martin we know there won't be much turnaround time from turning the book in to publication.

I'm guessing it's more due to fixing up the complaints that arose about the first book - slow-ass plotting, rubbish female love interest, paper-thin side characters. These issues were pretty universal and I'm sure some got back to Rothfuss.

Brandon Sanderson said something very interesting about this at his signing last night. Basically, he said that after NotW did so well, Rothfuss felt that the next book needed to be perfect. So, he threw out what he had written before and started for scratch. That combined with all the other reasons discussed is the reason for delay. Sanderson also said that Rothfuss has gotten past the whole fear and added stress bit from the success of NotW and that he's writing well and steady now and that WF is on track.

Another thing: if I recall, that Kvothe warned Bast (that was the name of the fairy-thing that Kvothe has an apprentice right?) that Chronicler (I think that's his name) was one of the few people in the world that knew the name of iron. But then Bast scares the crap out of Chronicler later on, doesn't jive with Kvothe's warning as to Chronicler's power.

This is from Pat Rothfuss's blog yesterday:

Is it drafty in here?

So today I was going to pass along some news about the book in a blog titled, "Why I don't talk about Book Two."

The blog was proving rather difficult to write until I realized it was really two blogs. So today we're just going to get the news, and I'll talk about the other stuff later.

Here's the news: I've finally finished my latest draft of The Wise Man's Fear.

That's two that have turned in their manuscripts.

:)

He is careful to say this may not be the final draft of the book. His editor is going to look it over and they will then talk. Still it is progress.

Whatev's I want Kvothe to stop being a melancholy barkeep and start torching those headcrabs with magic.

Part of me fears that emo barkeep Kvothe won't leap into action until a second trilogy covering new ground, rather than memoirs. I could be wrong though and Rothfuss may be planning on moving the future story ahead with the next book as well.

yes, keep in mind that he has previously turned in drafts that prooved to need a lot of work. He's been rather confident about this draft, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that it probably doesn't need any major re-writes. But even if re-writes are a minimum, Daw would have to go balls-out to get a release in time for the Christmas season. Considering that January is a dead-zone for book releases, I would anticipate that we are looking at Spring 2011 as the soonest possibility of a release.
