I made a new template, IMO it's an improvement, looks good for houses but its too big for the thumbs and doesnt look good when there are additional borders inside, examples:

Using the template, It took me 20s to do each.

EDIT:
A little improvement, in two version, the later one seems more useful to the wiki.

Btw there is a nice list of Shields at reddit(copyrighted, we cant use it without permission), I think that using similar mini shields is preferable over using downscaled version of larger ones. Because mini  shields dont need detailed or have fancy art work, but to illustrate what needed.

The template uses an elegant shield and a rather simple charge. I don't think mixing those is a good idea. Then it does not have the beauty of a coat of arms that completely consist of elegant element but it is still less clear then a good of arms that only has simple elements.
Wikipedia uses the simple elements as well. Besides clarity the coa can also be changed more easily. I like that approach especially for the main coa. Maybe we could decide to show a second coa on the pages which has a different style.

For the shield at reddit; you mean to use them for the mini-shields that we show on booth sides of the character names? The shield that have a motto certainly can be replaced. But for the others I think a downscaled version works usually pretty good. For instance the Bolton coa is still very well visible when downscaled.

You are right, It fit HBO style more, still by cutting the shield frame I am getting a pretty good result.  http://i39.tinypic.com/2ll0njb.png
Anyway, I think that we should keep too simple shields, they indeed work better for small scale and only require a simple gradient as frame to separate it from the back ground and focus on the middle like those on the reddit page, as for the larger shields for the house pages, I'll wait and see if we can come up with something more interesting.

The only ones that still have a bit of a mix are the Harlaw one (the scyte is distinct) and maybe the colour of the direwolf of Stark3.

The other ones are really nice. And all elements use the same kind of style so they seem to belong together.

EDIT: doesnt it suppose to have 7 colors of the rainbow as in the 7 in the faith of the seven?

The banner of the Windblown needs some work... Also, the banner of the Stormcrows is wrong... it shows two crossed arrows instead of crossed lightning bolts
