GRRM's been all about this guff on his not a blog, and I don't see a thread anywhere else. What do you guys think about them? Really, the only dude on that list who could actually take Cthulu in a fight is probably Conan, since he deals with eldritch abominations all the time. Maybe not in a direct hand to hand fight, but he could kill whatever Cultist is summoning Cthulu and return him to Ryleh or something.

But otherwise, to fight Cthulu, you'd need some Quick Ben, or Kellhus (he's already mad!). Not even Al'Thor can deal with Cthulu.

I'd say any Malazan character could take on Cthulhu and win, including random Marine recruits as well as dead people.

You guys missed the memo. Conan already killed it, looted its lair of gold, and absconded with the bitches.

Somebody already pointed this out, but the only final round that makes sense is Cthulhu—Aslan.

I don't really agree at all. Firstly because Cthulhu vs. Aslan would have to be semi final round, not final round (being on group 4 and 3 respectively). Secondly because Aslan is not all that powerful. Though supposed to represent God in CS Lewis' books, he is far from immortal, and vulnerable to knives and pointy objects as his death at the Stone Table proves. Any character sufficiently adept at swordsmanship such as Conan or Drizzt) should stand a fair chance vs. Aslan. Raistlin Majere at the height of his power is also pretty formidable. In the laternate reality in the Twins' trilogy he's supposed to be able to take on the Gods themselves. The Shrike is also supposed to be nigh indestructible (and it seems it managed to barely pull ahead of Arthur Dent).

While Cthulhu is big and strong, he's also not very quick or clever. His physical form is certainly vulnerable (and was made to retreat in the Call of Cthulhu story by ramming a merchant ship into it).

Aslan chose to be vulnerable at the Stone Table. I imagine he doesn't have to be vulnerable if he doesn't want to be. ;)

Well, depending on the Narnia book, he does seem to have pretty variable power levels, but he also seems to be a very physical being within his Lion incarnation (kind of like Jesus Christ in human form), so I wouldn't be so sure of his invulnerability. It's been a long time since I read the Narnia books, though.

If fighting Aslan, beguiling one of his human wards with candy, forcing the Lion to surrender himself to you in his stead and then calling the match before the deep magic kicks in definitely seems like the way to go.

Clearly the answer is Kahlan Amnell. Just when Cthulu is about to strike the terrible final blow, a war will break out, and deus ex machina will save the day.

Ouch. Locke is going to get ripped apart by Rand :(

Though I am so pleased that I can vote for Ged calling dragons to burn twilight boy to a crisp. Ouch. A choice between Aslan and Eragon. Allegory Jesus or Self Insert Twat. Can I vote for Cthulu eats their souls?

Would you expect anything less? WoT is more popular, and Rand is FAAR more overpowered. Locke is pretty mediocre in a fight anyways, so I can't see any justification for him coming out on top.

I was dissapointed there was no Kellhus.

Am I the only one who thinks this whole concept is stupid? High magic fantasy should never be compared to low magic fantasy. Jaime is a warrior with actual skill not just some wizard who can snap his fingers and all of his enemies die. GRRM is the best because his characters are realistic and if Jaime can't raise a ransom or escape he is f_cked.

I did love GRRM's detailed response about how Jaime would bash Hermoine's face in. Classic.

This attitude bugs me. Light hearted fun is acceptable, on occasion.

It's just for fun, dude.

As someone who wrote a few of the cage matches, I was surprised by how many people took the match-ups absolutely seriously, as far as pulling D&D stats into their breakdown of why Character A had no chance against Character B.

I still think Arthur Dent should walk it.

Since the time and place of Arthur Dent's death is clearly foretold, and no other genre characters are present, it's clear that he has already won.

The lacking of Malazan characters, Mat Cauthon vs. Locke, Pug/Tomas, and many others makes it all a little disappointing. Why include Eragon and other ones not worthy of even discussing? Damn publishers.

Well Dent could of course withdraw from the tournament altogether.

Or possibly he loses but isn't killed, he could for example easily be paralysed and then tormented by Cthulhu for 800 million years. I'd consider that a loss as well.

Because Eragon is far more popular than all of those characters (excepting perhaps the WOT ones)?

At this time I would like to raise the question of whether or not the participants are allowed their deus ex machina, without which most would certainly not be there? Will Elric have Stormbringer, will Gandalf have Shadowfax?

It makes a world of difference. It'll be more like a pay-per-view match, with Jim Ross and the King at the press tables. Wretched asthmatic vs. smartass young republican is not the same match as Raistlin w/the Staff of Magius vs. Ender and his AI girlfriend. I hope the Roland v. Elric match doesn't conflict timewise. Is this at the Jerrydome?

[EDIT] Ah. Never mind. I see the height/weight/reach is posted: Raistlin v. Ender. No AI or spiderbabies but a laser! Stay frosty kid. Use the force. Fear is the little death. Carai an Caldazar! The enemy's gate is down.

I voted for Hermione. It's ridiculous to think that one-handed Jaime can defeat magic; I think that if it came down to this duel, Hermione would totally pull out the death curses.
