How much do we know about this guy and when are we going to see him in the series?

We know he's short, and has approximately 2 kids. I'm guessing he's not gay, but he may shade towards bi, or full on straight.

We know he kick ass too from the stories in the AGOT, but seriously I have a feeling hes going to get involved up north at some point, I just want to be prepared for it when he does. He also is probably the only one who knows the truth about jon

More than likely. We also know at least one of his kids JoJen has the gift of prophecy. His Green Dreams. Meera is an exceptionally skilled hunter. We also know he showed up at the tourney of the Harrenhall. And that was his first interaction with the Starks. He's also reputed have been to the Isle of Faces,( I think thats what it's called) and possibly have met some COF's.

I expect to hear quite a bit about him in 'A Dance with Dragons'.  Martin has said the book will cover events in the North.  We need to find out how Bolton intends to get past Moat Cailin (last known to be in the hands of the Ironmen).  He may also have to contend with Reed's guerilla attacks from the swamps.

Also, as I recall, Lady Mormont and a Glover were seeking out Greywater Watch with letters from Robb.  This could have huge implications for Jon Snow...

I'd love to have a POV from Howland but I think he will remain in the background.

Didn't Glover and Lady Mormont go to the red wedding with Rob?

I thought they were going to go afterwards, with lady Cat, who would then depart for whiteharbor.

Galbart Glover and Maege Mormont were not at the Red Wedding.

Anyone else think he has something more important than background?  I think he has someone, or something important.  His children are crucial characters in Bran's story, so it stands to reason that he sent them because of some other duty he must perform himself.  There could be some ward-type speculations, someone Ned smuggled away from Robert, or King's Landing in general to Greywater, probably the best remote location of Westeros.

In other words, there has to be some kind of reason he has stayed put so long.  The last thing we need is another Lysa!

I can't wait to read more about Howland, he seems like he'll be yet another amazing character. I think he'll be pretty crucial to things in the North somehow. And there is no way he'll turn out like Lysa. I would personally kill GRRM if he did that.

If you believe that Meera’s story about the little crannogman refers to Howland then you get a lot of information about him from that:

Quote

"Once there was a curious lad who lived in the Neck. He was small like all crannogmen, but brave and smart and strong as well. He grew up hunting and fishing and climbing trees, and learned all the magics of my people."

Bran was almost certain he had never heard this story. "Did he have green dreams like Jojen?"

"No," said Meera, "but he could breathe mud and run on leaves, and change earth to water and water to earth with no more than a whispered word. He could talk to trees and weave words and make castles appear and disappear."

To translate: Howland Reed is a very high level magic user. He is not a green seer[/i]. From this background he visits the Isle of Faces, and meets the green men. That’s unique experience points, we can assume that he levelled up a lot there, we can speculate that he’s the best trained animist/druid on Westeros, south of the Wall at least. If you want to speculate further, he’s also a warg. (There are two reasons to believe this: (1) Meera and Jojen know a lot about warging, given that neither of them is one. (2) This could be how he helped Ned Stark to defeat Arthur Dayne: by warging into Arthur, just like Bran wargs into Hodor. That’s the Howland Superwarg crackpot theory. Since Arthur died when Howland was in him, the event might have damaged Howland a lot. That’s the Howland is a Vegetable theory, explaining why he – uniquely among Stark bannermen – didn’t follow Robb’s muster.)

Weapons: “leathern shield and a threepronged spear.” “The lad was no knight, no more than any of his people. We sit a boat more often than a horse, and our hands are made for oars, not lances.”

So there you have it: Lvl 65 green animist, all crannogman spells, all green men spells, Warging + 10, Spear + 2 , Net + 1, Shield+1, riding -10. Rolls against willpower - 2 every round, takes critical spell damage for each failure.

He is the only living person to have been at the Tower of Joy.(unless Jon was born there, so he'd be the only living person who knows what happened)

Ned might have arranged for Tyrek to be kidnapped and taken to Howland in Greywater in case he died.

I am afraid that is impossable seeing as he didn't go missing till after ned was dead and Joffrey was king. he went missing after Myrcella is shiped off to Dorn and there is a riot.

Howland Reed is the guy behind the scenes.  He is Littlefinger's opposite and enemy.  The true fight in ASOIAF is not between Rhollor and the Great Other, Light and Darkness, Lannister and Stark, it is between Howland Reed and Littlefinger.  Howland Reed is going to stomp Littlefinger when he comes out of Greywater Watch.  He's going to be like Ah-nold with a genius IQ.

It is known.

I think that Howland Reed, and possibly all crannogmen, is a Children of Forest or a descendant of CoF and First Men. That explain his mystical traits.

BTW the castle he can make dissapear is Greywater Watch.

About the 'Howland is a Vegetable' theory, it seems a bit wrong since he fathered at least 2 children after the events at ToJ.

First of all we have a day by day solidifying theory that Meera and Jojen are actually Rhaenys and Aegon Targaryen (Elia and Rhaegar*s kids)

But now seriously I can*t see any problem with Howland siring children if from tIme to time he exist like a grass just in order to recharge his forces from the Mother Nature. If we can believe that a man may warg into Reeds or Grass and lives like that for years why would it not be possible for the Grass to have human babies after all.
:)
We know that even without any magic some herbs (Moon Tea ??? IIRC) are in general use to prevent pregnancy in Westeros.  What is the problem then if there is something that can work in the reverse?
