I think the book introduces a number of very cool, and new ideas, especially the magic system. The Shardblades and plates are great, Kaladins powers and his exploration of them, aswel as Shallons and so on are all good hooks. Theres also a few big surprises in the end
I enjoyed the Mistborn, but i think this has more potential as a series

Maybe he should slow down a bit and do a bit more of the editing/rewriting process. He has admitted himself he dislikes that part.
Really looking forward to the second book. Hopefully it isn't as bloated as the first. When did page count equal epic?

If its a good book what does the page count matter? Theres a certain amount of movies where i look at my watch and hope it wont end. Same goes for some books. Way of Kings was a very strong start to a series IMO
I agree it was a good book. Been a while since I read it so I can of point to examples of how it could possibly of benefits from a bit of a trim. Must read it again and find out.
It was indeed a good start to a series and as I said I'm eagerly anticipated the second.
Regards page count. It sometimes seems that fantasy books can only be epic when they come with massive page counts, which can sometimes lead to unnecessary filler. That's there's a trend developing towards bigger books.
Eye of the World, great hung and dragon reborn all clock it at under 700 pages. Only once again does a book in the series do that and that was path of daggers, which is considered as only half a book. WoT is a series that can really be accused of unnecessary bloat. It debatable that the 3 book split was needed as well.
A game of thrones and clash of kings both also under 700 pages. Next three do not and the last two wouldnt exactly be considered the best in the series there.
Kings Dark Tower series encounters a similiar trend.
Nothing exactly wrong with big books but some of them could really do with serious trimming. The more power the author gets when they gain success seems to lead to larger and less focused books. Indulgence.
Mark Lawerence's two thorns books both well under the 700 mark. Abercrombie's whole trilogy not much longer than Dance of Dragons. Scott Lynch's two books of the bastards series again under 700 pages.
Shorter books usually lead to better reads.

To those who say Kaladin is godmode: Szeth is way more godmode.
Shallan has a Shardblade. WTF?
