*provisional deaths

Roughly by order of death, I compiled from two separate lists so it's not chronological in the middle, but I don't care. Only named characters who died in the course of the books, so Ramsay's girls and Quent's other companions don't make it, though I've let Hazzea in because it was recent. I've almost certainly missed a few, please feel free to point them out.

Surprisingly low death toll for named characters, 35 not that much above AFFC's low. Martin's smite button tends to fall on the unnamed extras, giving much bloodier tale to the reader than this list bears out.
You're missing a few deaths. I'm rereading ADwD now and the 6 Unsullied who were killed in an early Dany chapter(including Missandi's brother) were all named. You also missed Groat, Penny's brother. And Penny's dog Crunch also was killed. There are a bunch of minor, unimportant, named deaths peppered in the book.

I love this list.
A few others would be:
The Butcher-King of Astapor, forgot his name. And I think the two leaders that came after him were also named. Also the guy who tried to kill Drogon, the so called hero. His name is revealed post-mortem.

King Cleon. King Cleon the Second. King Cutthroat comes after that his the first Cleon's mistress, called Queen Whore. They all die.
Not sure about the hero's name.

Can't think of anymore.

Arys Oakheart, and the Black Brother you're thinking of was Will.

Horza your list rocks..."Didn't fear the Weeper" is priceless!

I suppose Martin gets his rep because he killed Ned, which was horrifying to me at the time, but alas necessary if you are going to have a story. Also killing Robb and Cat (UnCat is another matter) and for my Lady. Lady was a heartless killing. The killing of Ned was quite shocking though for many and set the tone even if GRRM has not killed off that many main characters of late. That, and the threat is always there. I suspect we will get many more deaths of major characters soon. Besides he can only kill off so many major peeps...you have to have someone to write about ;-)

As for the dead coming back. I don't feel this is necessarily too contrived or overused as some others feel. In a world where news does not travel all that quickly, rumors are rampant, and being "dead" can be a good thing, it make sense that many people come back from the dead figuratively and literally in some cases. For example Arya. Everyone just assumes she is dead because they cannot find her and she is so young how can she possibly make it on her own.

I wasn't sure what to do with him since he dies so many times, so I just counted the first time he was said to have been killed.

Skimmed the thread. No one mentioned Quentyn as a narrator that died, that I could see. Narrators (updated):

Prologues/Epilogues:
Will
Master Cressen
Chett
Merrett Frey
Pate
Varamyr Sixskins (lives on through One Eye)
Kevan Lannister

Other narrators:
Eddard Stark
Catelyn Stark (revived)
Arys Oakheart
Quentyn Martell

To whoever pointed out characters dying in their own chapters: Other than prologues and epilogues, I have long noticed this phenomenon. I stuck by it, but Theon always pissed me off because he was the exception - he did, after all, die at the end of his own chapter.

But then it turned out that that wasn't true. I've restored my faith in the theory that narrators don't die at the end of their own chapters.
