A nice quick read is Stephen Kings "The Eye's of the Dragon" This was fantasy novel he came up with for his daughter I believe.

Who is this King guy?  I'm having a hard time finding any of his books.

I like Daniel Keys Moran, very ... humane... (left wing trololol) weird SF series. Criminal that he has no publishing contract going so he can focus on writing.

Any of several novels by Kim Stanley Robinson. In particular the Mars Trilogy, The Years of Rice and Salt, and Galileo's Dream are all worth reading.  A word of warning tho':  GRRM is politically liberal, but Robinson is farther left than that. It does not come out in the last two but it is definitely there in Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars. Then again Martin did write "Meathouse Man", which can be read as a savage anti-corporate satire, and The Armageddon Rag has a definite 1960's New Left flavor to it. I like it, but YMMV. Another warning: the yuck factor for Meathouse Man may be a bit much. I read it once and I may not read it again.

Not much interesting. Her other Series "The Coldfire trilogy" is much more interesting.   And " This Alien Shore
" is fucking awesome.

"The Iron King" by Maurice Druon is said to be brilliant. GRRM himself wrote the preface.

Great book, "It" was the pinnacle of his career, IMHO.

As for obscure books, I'd recommend "The Last Legends of Earth" ... and that covers a host of other categories as well. It's simply fantastic.

When you finish reading this book, you won't put it down and pick up another. For days at least, you will just sit back thinking about the book saying "wow that has heavy, but SO great".

I'll stand by that.

"The Magicians" by Lev Grossman

It's an interesting read, like a mix of Narnia and Harry Potter for adults.

SA,
This one belongs firmly in the 'Series Recommendations'  Grossman's work isn't what you would call obscure.

Great books though.

Has anyone read Waking Beauty by Paul Witcover? I thought it was brilliant -- wonderful prose and a really twisted but intriguing world. I'd never seen present tense used in that long of a book before but it works perfectly.
