I'm sure there're recommendations for Stannis buried in year-old threads, but with season 2 looming, I figured we should start fresh.

Quote

Stannis Baratheon, Lord of Dragonstone and by the grace of the gods rightful heir to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, was broad of shoulder and sinewy of limb, with a tightness to his face and flesh that spoke of leather cured in the sun until it was as tough as steel. Hard was the word men used when they spoke of Stannis, and hard he was. Though not yet five-and-thirty, only a fringe of thin black hair remained on his head, circling behind his ears like a shadow of a crown. ... Stannis kept his own whiskers cropped tight and short. They lay like a blue-black shadow across his square jaw and bony hollows of his cheeks. His eyes were wide open wounds beneath his heavy brows, a blue as dark as the sea by night. His mouth would have given despair to even the drollest of fools; it was a mouth made for frowns and scowls and sharply worded commands, all thin pale lips and clenched muscles, a mouth that had forgotten how to smile and had never known how to laugh.

My pick is Andrew Howard. The only thing I've really seen him in is the 2003 version of Lion in Winter. I love watching this mini series for the dialog, and Howard does a fantastic job as Richard (the Lionheart). And he's 5 years younger than Addy, so his age is perfect.

What are your recommendations for the Stannis casting queue?

I've not seen any of Andrew Howard's work, so I honestly can't comment on his suitability. I shall add the TV series you speak of to my lovefilm list, it's getting a little slim :-) and I like the Katherine Hepburn film I assume it is based upon.
My suggestions:

David Morrissey

  • Currently: hitting the boards as Macbeth in a few weeks.
  • Best work: Red Riding (TV) South Riding (TV) The Deal (TV); he's TV gold.
  • For those who want Liam Neeson (but know it will never happen) Morrissey is a good substitute.
  • He is a great actor, with a lot of gravitas and he's a pretty big name in the UK.
  • Appearance http://images.clickl...id Morrisey.jpg

Steven Waddington

  • Currently: Filming TV mini-series Titanic.
  • Best work: The Last of The Mohicans of course. But he was in The Tudors too playing the Duke of Buckingham.
  • He's been cast by a lot of good directors in supporting roles including Tim Burton, Ridley Scott & Michael Mann.
  • He has the presence Stannis would demand.
  • Appearance http://www.wearyslot...070401-1786.jpg

Kevin McKidd
  • Currently: Grays Anatomy, but I'm not sure if he's signed on for multiple series. A fan would know...
  • Best work: Rome, Trainspotting, Dog Soldiers
  • Nina Gold cast him in Rome
  • Er look at imdb, he's never shit
  • He's a familiar face to americans as well as europeans
  • Appearance http://www.2flashgam...McKidd_0019.jpg

Solid suggestions, GD. I've never seen Morrisey, but Waddington would be a great choice as well. With McKidd, I'll keep waiting for him to yell out something about Concord. ;)

As for the 2003 version of LiW, the screen play was adapted by the original playwrite (as was the Hepburn version). It's longer, so I'm assuming more of the original play is in it. As a fan of the original, I wonder how well you'll accept Howard playing Anthony Hopkins' role. PM me when you watch it.

Personally I want to see Christopher Eccleston as Stannis. He's a damn fine actor and I could see him being a nice contrast to the rest of the people playing Baratheons. I've always see Stannis as looking different from Robert and Renly so it wouldn't be a big deal that they don't look to similar.

I'd like for Eccleston to get the role too.  There's some uncertainty as to whether he'd sign on to play multiple seasons, but I've read lately that perception may be overblown.

If I had my way (a man can dream), It'd be Mark Strong. He might be getting a bit "bit" for TV, but we did get Sean Bean as well, and Jeremy Irons is doing Borgias, so there's still hope. :)

Mark Strong doesn't look like Renly or Robert in the series but I could overlook that based on how brilliant he would be in the role of Stannis. It feels really unlikely but a man can dream. Besides, as many have previously pointed out, they will definitely get a star in a role somewhere to compensate for the loss of Bean and Addy and I can't think of anyone more suitable than Stannis. Then again Stannis looks set up to play a large role in future books so I don't know if Strong would want to make such a big commitment, I really doubt Ecclestone would. Anything is possible though.

Stannis doesn't look like Renly or Robert either. He's plainer, harder looking. He even tries to look different from Robert by having a close cropped beard rather than a large bushy one. So I think they just need an actor who has blue eyes like Robert and Stannis. Even hair color doesn't matter since they can dye it.

Mark Strong would be my second choice after Titus Welliver. Both have those piercing blue eyes. Mark Strong has the adavantage of being English but I've seen Titus Welliver speak with an accent before, most notably he played an IRA member in The Sons of Anarchy. I think the Stannis casting is the most important of season 2 and I hope they can get a fairly well-known actor for this role.

Welliver certainly looks the part but I've only ever seen him in Lost so I can't really judge his abilities properly. To be honest though, I think the fact that he's American does rule him out considering all the brilliant British actors available to play the part in his stead. They only seem to reach across the Atlantic when it's really necessary, such as in Dinklage's case.

How have you not seen Deadwood, or Gone Baby Gone, or The Town?  He was even pretty good on the quickly canceled NBC show Life.  He's a damned good actor.  And you should definitely watch Deadwood, as it's just about as good a show as you could ever hope to see.

That's another point for Titus Welliver: his relationshup with HBO. HBO loves to cast actors who have been on their network before. But like I said, Mark Stron IS English and that's probably a bigger point in his favor.

I'll always see Mark Strong as Stannis, but he's probably too big an actor now. Equally, I'd love Christopher Eccleston- he's sooooo awesome!

The guy who plays Jaime is Danish, and that's not a role that requires an appearance more specific than "handsome" (no shortage of handsome British actors!)

I agree with those who say Christopher Eccleston would be an awesome Stannis. He does "dour" and "serious" so well, and he looks the part too.

I've actually now shifted into team David Morrissey for this one. After watching some clips on youtube I've decided he really looks the part. He's got a lot of the harsh features of Stannis that people favour Ecclestone for but also has a much closer family resemblance to Mark Addy and Gethin Anthony. Also, being one year younger than Addy he is the perfect age for Stannis. The fact that he regularly does TV roles is also promising.

To be honest I just hope Tony Curran doesn't get the part. He's a good actor but he's no Stannis.

Just a pipe dream, but I have always pictured Stannis as looking like Rufus Sewell.

Good picture of him looking how I imagine Stannis

He's even doing a Stannis face here!

Great choice!  Was my initial reaction.  But then I thought back to his portrayal of Richard in A Lion in Winter and a guest role he had in Law & Order SVU.  Yes, he is gruff LOOKING.  But dude comes across as a bit too effeminate in everything I have seen him in.  Good fit looks wise, but not personality wise.

I would also absolutely love for Eccleston to play Stannis. Is it "The Shadow Line" he's tangled up with at the moment?

Camelot's only got two things going for it. Kay Green's acting (her incredibly supple acting) and Joseph Fiennes looking like he has to take a poop. Otherwise the show is a fecal donut. So when it's given the axe after the finale, I'd like to see Fiennes get a sizzle reel of his best constipated moments from Camelot and send that in as his resume to play Stannis. He'd get the spot in a heartbeat!
