If Mark Strong would be up for TV work, I have to go for him- he's done fantasy, I think the character is intriguing enough to get a big name actor involved as Season one has been well received critically and commercially to date, and it's similar to the dour vibe he plays in other projects but different enough that he wouldn't feel type-cast. Plus his accent is a good fit for Mark Addy's grimmer brother and he looks similar enough to both his brothers' actors and his book counterpart.

Like the picture and the stern look.  Good choice!

A friend of mine said they read a blurb somewhere that Liam Neeson is being considered for Stannis and that GRRM had visited Neeson at his home in New York.  Has anyone else seen anything on this?

Seems unlikely, LN is a bit too high profile of an actor for even an HBO television series. I would love to see it however.

As awesome as Liam Neeson is, he's a little old for Stannis. Would anyone really buy him as Addy's younger brother?

I doubt it- too much money, doesn't look or sound like either Baratheon brother or his character from the books and too old are all points against

They got Sean Bean for a single season.. Stannis is alive through four books (and maybe counting) - as much as I hope for the sake of the show and the ratings that they'll cast someone with a known face for Stannis, it'll be spendy!

While Stannis might be the younger brother, he acts like he's a granddad so an older actor might still work.

Camelot's a piece of shit, but Joseph Fiennes certainly looks the part. While his combination of pouty and constipated wasn't ideal for Merlin, it would be perfect for Stannis! And while he's six years younger than Mark Addy, he looks like he could be the same age.

I've always thought Ray Stevenson would be great for the part.

Stannis is definitely portrayed as a more mature guy and older looking. When I first read the books I thought Stannis WAS the older sibling, and that Robert was simply King by conquest.

Were we to exist in a reality parallel to our own with only three differences, those difference being that orange Jell-O is purple, the television series Friends was actually a Mexican soap opera called ¡Los Amigos en New York City! and the word 'joking' means 'absolutely serious', I would certainly be joking. However we live in this universe and orange Jell-O is orange, the only time we get to see the Friends gang speak Spanish is in the seventeenth episode of the first season, The One With Two Parts, where Marcel steals the remote control causing the entire cast to speak in SAP mode and no, I'm not, at all, joking.

If Neeson came at a "I love the books and would work for scale or close to it" cost, I think he could be portayed as close to the same age as Robert, but would be a fit that's almost too on-the-nose. AND, having his name attached would likely dominate the marketing, so that would be a headache.

Don't get me wrong, he would surely knock the role out of the park. But I don't think he'd be right for the show.

I think Mark Strong would be perfect for Stannis, but I'd imagine he's outside HBO's budget as well.

So did I! I have no idea why though.

I think that James Wilcox could be a good Stannis. Another picture here.

I love the look of Wilcox but he almost seems too charismatic in his photos.  I picture Stannis as having the charisma of a dirt clod.
