They tried to give Emilia Clarke and Harry Lloyd the purple eyes, but they didn't look very good on film and caused them too much irritation/pain so they dropped it.

In the show, Robert is a mountain of a man but looks well past his prime with his glory days behind him. Renly looks young yet unremarkable, ambitious and with all his battles ahead of him.
Pretty much correlates with the story.

I think Renly looks a lot better this season, and will do a much better job with the charismatic, confident Renly people come to love in the books.

I think Renly looks great this season, although I thought he looked great last season as well.
