DISCUSS: Suggest Articles

Linda

Recommended Posts

We've added a few new Articles lately, but we want more and we want your suggestions! We may also look for volunteers to write some of them.

The idea is that the Helpfiles can be more barebones overviews of theme and guidelines, whereas the Articles can delve deeper into those topics as well as expand beyond the scope of those.

We currently have categories for Basic (newbie & new-to-the-game info), Character (how to create and play), Roleplay (help for particular kinds of roleplay and roleplay in general) and Theme.

The suggestions for additional Articles so far:

Money

Chivalry & Tournaments -- common rules, proper conduct, etc

Horses (which I think someone may have already mentioned)

Armour (not just the differences between Dorne and Westeros, but about armour in general. What the various pieces of the armour are, eg. greaves, breastplates etc. How to make them more fancy, maybe tourney armour vs. combat armour, etc.)

To add to Coolant,

Everyday things commonly found in:

Westeros:

Dorne:

Types of Fabrics, like what fabrics are common in Westeros or Dorne, if you feel the need region, and who would be able to afford it... I know it seems trivial but when you are posing its hard to know for sure which fabrics/colors would be most commonly available, and for Nobles what could be purchased at a higher price (if there is already an article like this then disregard). same goes for things like foods and fruits but it just depends on how deep you want to get into it.

Money!

Do we have one on money?

How much is a Dragon really. How much would people have available to them. How poor is Janden?

I know this is a bit of a foggy question, but is it possible to put a vague framework around it?

Money, yes.

Also Septas. Aren't unmarried maidens more or less always escorted by one? I know we were told in beta to be sure to keep to that, and septas were very common in RP, but they're almost non-existent now.

Also...I forgot. It was really good, though. And pretty vital. Yeah, so vital it flew right out of my head.

Yes, Money was one of the first suggested, its in the initial post. :) Its quite a beast to tackle, but we've made some notes about what it needs to contain.

Oops.

I didn't notice it there.

Nothing to see here.

Yeah, when I saw this topic in my head lit up Clothing, Money, Armor. I was also thinking of maybe a helpfile dedicated to the formal relations between houses? I'm not saying updated on-the-fly almanach of everything. Just the basics (like House Ryger and Smallwood disliking each other), so that one can glance and think "Oh, my kin hate these guys. I'd probably know to at least initially dislike them...".

There's just too many Houses for us to manage that, I am afraid. We have in the past asked players of various houses to help write up a recent history & current relations profile for houses, but we've had very few takers.

Hmmm... what if instead of looking at relations between all Houses in general, we had an article that just focused on the Great Houses... Specifically, the relations between them and any short-term or long-term goals and objectives. These can then be considered by other houses, which are after all, usually bannermen to a Great House.

I think we have enough active PCs for a number of the Great Houses to at least come up with a general guideline for what their House wants to accomplish?

For obvious reasons, House Stark and House Greyjoy don't really need to be considered. The Lannisters and Baratheons both have their heirs around and a number of supporting characters while the Tyrells, Arryns and Tullys also have some active PCs around. Furthermore, the active PCs which are bannermen to each Great House could maybe help out in this regard.

Therefore, maybe all the Westerlanders, the Riverlanders, the Reachers, Valemen, and Stormlanders could get together and help their liege lords out a bit in coming up with an entry for an article on the Current State of Relations between the Great Houses.

Just off the top of my mind, there are two quasi-conflict/feuds that could be written in based on current RP events. Due to the Meadows vs. Reyne feud, maybe relations between the Lannisters and Tyrells are a bit strained at the moment? At the same time, maybe the fact that Sarya Baratheon's betrothal to Brynden Tully has lasted so long without marriage (an OOC issue I know, but could be incorporated into current RP events) means there's a bit of a strain in relations between House Tully and House Baratheon. Just some suggestions off of the top of my head.

About the money article. Out of my historial background I would suggest to describe the value of a Dragon/Sun first in the normal sense. Read: One Dragon= X amount of silver coins = X amount of copper coins.

Second description should be what we often use in Historical quantitative research, the comparison between the basic currency ( Dragon/Sun) and the amount of foodstuff one can buy with one golden coin.

Ofcours grain is the most used unit that we use in historical research but as this is rp I would suggest other units ( that we use as well)

- A loaf of bread.

- Common wine

- Red Arbor ( dunno why I put this up but perhaps it should be handy to know so that those who aren't rich nobles, don't rp drinking Arbor Red all the time :P)

- wage of a sellsword

- wage of an artist/goldsmith/blacksmith( for the nobles who want to let stuff made.)

- price of a normal tourney horse

- price of normal tourney armour.

I'll just link a post by Ran - http://asoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/topic/46118-westerosi-currency-how-does-it-work/page__p__2276467#entry2276467 :

"56 copper pennies = 7 copper stars = 1 silver stag, 210 silver stags = 30 silver moons = 1 gold dragon"

So I won't forget, I'll toss in a couple of more that came out of some recent channel conversations.

Farin brought up portraits and sculpture, and given that the setting actually lacks the painting on canvas we see during the Renaissance, perhaps something on Arts & Crafts might be useful too. Obviously, most nobles won't be directly engaged in the production of such pieces -- though weaving of tapestries is common among women, and needlework too -- they might still be consumers.

The other topic also relates to consumption. For lack of a better title, Shopping in Westeros. We have seen in the past that a lot of players don't quite grasp what you can and can't buy in a medieval setting. For example, no ready-made clothing.

As a subset of the Chivalry article, you might want to include something in there about duels and matters of honor. I don't really believe that we should just duel about everything, but since this type of environment thrives on conflict it would be good to have a set of guidelines to go about in such a situation within the code of Chivalry. How closely would Westeros follow the code duello, etc? The society is old enough and the court structured enough that it's likely something like this would have been worked out--there may be various differences between the way the Reach does it as opposed to the Vale, for example. Just a suggestion.

Alright, so we have:

Money

Chivalry & Tournaments

Horses

Armour

Clothing -- this could include how clothing is and isn't purchased in Westeros if we don't do a general "shopping" article

Possibly something on Arts & Crafts

Septas could perhaps be squeezed into the article on playing women at court, reminding players that unmarried women need to be very careful with their reputation. This will certainly become even more the case under Baelor in King's Landing.

Still thinking about what to do about the house writeup suggestions. Not sure that it fits under Articles, may try to cover at least the Great Houses on their family tree pages as was intended.

One other thought has been to expand the Profiles wiki to have one section for Profiles and one for "Groups" such as the tourney societies and other more or less formal associations. Maybe the Great Houses could fit in there.

  • 1 month later...

A handful of other thoughts:

-Combat, Chargen, and You: some newer players have been making what they think is a good combat build, but then they find out that the stats they picked are entirely irrelevant in the current combat system. A rough idea on what fits where as far as translation into the actual skills; for players of the ladies, we can't help counsel much. ;)

-A Lady's Primer / A Lord's Primer: bullet points for our period in the setting, what's appropriate/expected/etc. Some of it is touched on in the Concordance, but - just as we don't have cyvasse, making a note on any of the particularly dramatically relevant (or irrelevant) things that seem to keep cropping up (like guards/septas) that might help some of the newer players. Alternatively, "A Day in the Life" to give an idea of things on an average standard, since the characters in the books tend to be exceptions, one way or another, from the "norm".

I realise a lot of this is in various places in the Concordance, or other material, but collecting a couple of things into either pages or .pdfs might help ease some of the growing pains, or give people a bit of a help, when working on putting their characters together, and/or as they settle in and start needing the details to truly flesh things out, and where ASOIAF diverges from Medieval England period aspects (such as forms of address) that they might have somehow missed.
