Robert Downey Junior? HELL NO! Oded Fehr would be ideal... I mentioned Cas Anvar because of his audition though i don't like him either!

Never thought of them as arab or something.

Always thought about light skinned africans, like a variatino from somewhat- indian like color skin to northern africa, but different in culture.

I don't mind as they look exotic enough ;) A Dornish introduction is eagerly anticipated.

If we go the spanish route, then come on Jessica Alba as Tyene!

Yeah, not going to happen. I'd like to think for GoT, actors are hired for their acting ability moreso than their looks.

Jessica Alba can act if you give her good roles.

But I much more see Tyene as nearly scandinavian: pale, platine blonde, blue eyes... strange to see that she must have taken all from her mother. ^^

I think that it's not important to cast the Sand Snakes exactly as they are described in the books: what it is important is to be sure the actresses look very different from each other, given the extremely different mothers they have ( obviously I'm referring of the older four of them).

Well, yeah:

A tall, strong, not very handsome, musculated and sulky woman one for Obara.

A beautiful tall, dark-haired, dark-eyed, and feline woman for Lady Nym.

A innocent-looking blonde girl, seemingly shy and quiet woman for Tyene.

A small young dark-skined and curly-haired woman for Sarella.

By casting them according to the books, they are already damned different... and if they can find actresses with similar eyes and the V on the forehead, it would be perfect.

Oded Fehr for Oberyn!
Sand Snakes: I really think there should be onwe sand snake on television... then money can be spent on other things and to much faces only make things confusing.

Well, at least Lady Nym and Obara need to make it to the show... although I'd love if Tyene was there too...

Sarella / The Sphinx may turn important too, so, I'd say that at least the 4 older might be in the show... and maybe one from Ellaria.

Definitely always had a Persian feel to me. But that could be in large part by the fact that they're in a very desert based landscape.

Well Persia isn't a desert. FYI, Persians and Arabs are not the same. Persians can sometimes actually look "white".

As for my thoughts, since Dorne is quite obviously based on Spain, particularly the Muslim part, I was always thinking North African/tanned Hispanic for the salty Dornishmen. The mountain Dornishmen - just plain old white people.

Nick Tarabay as Oberyn would be my main suggestion here.
That's even though I tend to think of Dorne as a more Spanish / Sicilian type of place.
But in terms of having both the witty tongue and physical/combat capabilities that I expect from the character Oberyn, I think he could do it.

(And if Alayaya in the book somehow became Ros in the show, I'm sure this is less of a stretch.)

I've tended to think of the Rhoynar as either Middle Eastern or possibly Indian (though not quite as dark as they get in some areas given that the skintone is clearly said to be olive) so that's what I see for the salty Dornish. Given that I fear that the Dornish may be mostly cut out of the story (a death blow to my interest, if it happens), I suspect we'll be lucky if we at least get actors that look right for salty Dornish. Of course, it wouldn't be too hard to mix in some of the stony Dornish looks, but given how everything gets simplified I imagine they want them to look homogeneous.
Dorne isn't being cut from the story.  They simply don't bear mentioning until the middle of the third book and the fourth book.  There's no reason for the HBO guide or the Blue Ray commentary to confuse tv-only viewers by describing them in detail now.  And now that Princess Myrcella has been sent to Dorne, they've been safely included in the story to the extent of their involvement in the books.  We're not losing Dorne.

Ahh, and here is GRRM's comment on the topic -- actually revealed it in response to my hopes that Arianne was inspired by Salma Hayek. ;)
I'm geeking off the fact that GRRM watched Prince's videos.

Has anyone mentioned Indira Varma yet? Very beautiful, can pull off sassy and strong characters. She could play Arianne Martell if they don't mind aging her up a bit.

Varma has definitely been mentioned, though usually in the role of Ellaria Sand. She'd be terrific.

umm there won't be many sandsnakes. there will be like 3 tops and that includes arriane the adult a young adult and a teenager. and they probably will be at least olive skin tones to differentiate them from most westerosi. And if they could cast Antonio Banderas and Javier Bardem as Doran and Oberyn respectively. Then it will be a triumph in television. I would even say that Oberyn's paramour will be replaced by Arianne, not really a difference if it is Uncle/Niece instead of Man/Mistress.

Like I just said on the Martells topic, someone over at WiC proposed this actress for either Arianne or Lady Nym:

All I want for xmas is Oded Fehr as Oberyn. He's EXACTLY how I pictured him.

And I'm sold on Sarah for Arianne btw. She's perfect.
