Viggo Mortensen. :cool4:

Yeah, not going to happen.

I heard that they offered the role of Ned Stark to Viggo and he turned it down because he thought he wasn't right for the role... Maybe this time? There won't be any Blackwater this season, so maybe they have extra cash to spend on a known actor?

John Lynch is a great character actor, I agree...I remember him from The Secret Garden

I am sure there is room for both he and Colm Feore somewhere in future
I'm sure he's doing the Borgias right now which has been renewed for a third season. Also he wouldn't fit  Mance at all .

I think that rumour is rubbish . Didn't Martin himself said that he always had Dinklage and Bean for Tyrion and Ned in mind from the beggining ?

Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond on Lost) is out of Scandal next year, but it seems he's working on a film project. anyway, He's my first choice for Mance.

They auditioned other people for Ned if Bean couldn't take the role.. So they might as well asked Viggo.

While you might not have been personally familiar with Charles Dance, he is an internationally renowned and respected actor with a career spanning at least four decades. I would definitely say he was a "recognisable face". In addition, a lot of the actors cast are far better known in the UK and Europe than they are necessarily in America so they're not strictly a bunch of unknowns.

I wouldn't mind Hugh Lawrie but I also think that Robert Carlyle, Richard Armstrong, Christopher Ecclestone or Mark Strong could pull off Mance with ease. Some of those are probably unavailable due to existing commitments however.
As an outside shot, I also think Anthony Head could work. He's incredibly charismatic, can sing, can appear younger than his actual age and has demonstrated, with his role of Uther Pendragon in the BBC's Merlin, that he can do cold and calculating as well as charming.

I WAS familiar with Charles Dance but and he is quite a renowned actor but fact of the matter is most viewers and certainly the average viewer will not know who he is. At the very most they will say "oh he looks familiar but fuck knows who he is". I would honestly guess that 80% of viewers would not know who he was.

Robert Carlyle would be interesting but way too famous. Christopher Ecclestone is quite a nice idea but Hugh Lawrie?! I don't think the lead actor of one of the most popular US television series would be a good idea. Plus I cannot stand Hugh Lawrie. Anthony Head would not fit the part at all in my opinion.

I can't see West as anything but Jimmy McNulty.

Agree! Epic show, epic characters.
Though I'm just starting to get used to Carcetti being Littlefinger.

James Purefoy would be good. As long as he can carry a tune, he doesn't need to be a great singer: Mance is always described as being more adequate than adept.

If we're going for Rome actors, then I like Kevin McKidd instead, for Mance.  He's got that wiry toughness that I totally see in Mance.

It's amazing, isn't it? Because when I first watched Season 1 all I could see was Carcetti when he was on the screen. Then I rewatched The Wire and all I saw was Littlefinger in Baltimore.

For that reason, I very much think Dominic West would be great as Mance, though I'm pretty sure it can't/won't happen. He's already in my favourite show, he may as well be in my second favourite as well, right?

I would weep the happiest of tears if Richard Armitage played Mance...or Oberyn...or a re-cast Benjen...or Ashara Dayne. Anyone, really. :blushing:

Mance Rayder needs to be played by Samuel L. Jackson, because every time I read his name I think of Mace Windu...

(Joking aside, I really do imagine him to look like that since the time I first saw his name. I know, I know ;) )

I really only see Henry Ian Cusick everytime I read about Mance. I think Mads Mikkelsen would be amazing aswell but he's got blackish hair.

Robert Carlyle's no more famous than Sean Bean was though, in fact SB's probably more famous because of his film work outside of the UK then RC. I didn't suggest Hugh Lawrie someone else did, I was just saying I wouldn't object to him, he wouldn't be my first choice though.

I'm interested in why you don't think Anthony Head fits the part? He's been put forward elsewhere on the forum for the Blackfish which I could see him playing.

I like this.  I thought Cusick would have made a great Davos, but he'd really make a great Mance, too.
