I was kind of iffy on the idea of Henry Ian Cusack as Mance, even though I love him, but now that I think about it, he's got that easy charisma that would be absolutely vital to explaining why the Wildlings are following a turncloak Crow. You definitely want somebody who is infinitely likable playing Mance, and he could definitely pull that off.

I can see him playing bard, too. And he has that look to him that would lend itself very well to the scene where Jon first meets him, and doesn't realize who he is.

I can see that.

He's a bit busy with the Hobbit at the moment, but what about Richard Armitage? He's got a Mance-y look to him, I think.

It's weird, I never picture any actor's face when I read the descriptions of characters but the first and only time it's happened in ASOIAF is when Black Walder Frey was described... my mental image of him has since been Richard Armitage and I can't shake it off. Unfortunately I don't think the role will ever be big enough for Mr Armitage.

I forgot to mention that I have always imagined Mance having an British/American hybrid accent. Basically the sound is if an American spent half of his life in England. It sounds a bit Irish-like. I don't know why, but that't just always been how I heard him.

Realy, I never heard of this guy. I know now hes playing Thorin Oakenshield, wich is a great part but still only one part in one movie, its not exatly a benchmark for success. Considering the kind of following and press coverage TV shows get this days i would not be suprised to see Hugo Weaving in GoT. So if the sceduele for the Hobit alows it Mr Armitage will say "Thank you. Where do I sign? and Who do I have to blow?"

I have to recommend you watch the BBC series "Robin Hood" (starring Jonas Armstrong). Armitage was simply amazing as the bad guy Guy of Gisborne. This is probably one of the best "bad guy" performances I have ever seen on television, with Keith Allen's Sheriff being almost as good! Yes, that's Alfie Allen's father, who I think would still be awesome as Balon Greyjoy (and not because of the familial relationship).

You can also see Armitage in this summer's "Captain America" though in a relatively small role
Spoiler
. Armitage also joined the cast of "Spooks" (known as "MI5" in the US and Canada I believe) during its 6th or 7th season I think it was.

He is easily currently my favorite British actor (at least among those who don't appear often in American film or television-- he isn't a Gary Oldman, that's for sure!).

Check out Richard Armitage at imdb.com!

Three things made me give up on seeing Armitage in GoT:
1) Sean Bean being cast as Ned Stark (the first role I pictured RA in)
2) Jerome Flynn being cast as Bronn (the other role I saw him as)
3) Armitage being cast as Thorin (which will take up his next two years or so)

I don't know if there will be any roles sufficiently large enough (nor as good a fit) that would be making an appearance starting in season 3 or 4 to bring him unto the show.

I imagined Ron Perlman a la Enemy at the Gates making a good Mance...

I'm for Joseph Campo.

Get Joe On the Show!

(It was his rendition of The Dornishman's Wife that convinced me).

I've seen him before and wasn't impressed, but the video you linked is making me rethink it.

Who is Henry Ian Cusick playing in the Hobbit?  I think that Luke Evans is playing Bard the Bowman.  (I also think he'd make a great Mance Rayder.)

If James Purefoy can sing, I think he would be great.

Henry Ian Cusick would be absolutely perfect. He was almost exactly how I pictured Mance when reading the book.

Sometimes a comedien is put into a more dramatic role and excels. So for Mance Rayder I am suggesting Russel Brand.

Haha I would love that but he would cost a lot to persuade I'd imagine. I can just imagine Russell riding into the battle against Stannis' army now :D

I really think Michael Fassbender would be on point for Mance Rayder

Michael Fassbender from the Movie "Centurion" where he goes ranging beyond Hadrian's Wall

he's played characters before who cast aside one ideology for another (Magneto)
as well as characters that were required to be deceptive and charming (Inglorious Bastards)

Urgh, yuck, I think you are meant to like Mance, not think he's slimy!

Who I have to kill for that? He would be perfect
