[ADWD SPOILERS] The Queen's Hand

I missed the sun setting in the east. Care to explain?

It was part of the prophecy from Mirri Maz Dur (the sun rising in the west and setting in the east). The sigil for House Martell is a sun and Westeros is west of Essos. Quaithe (I think it was her) mentioned the sun's son was traveling to her. Thus, when Quentyn died, a sun that had risen in the west "set" in the east. (an alternate interpretation is that Dorne is about to rebel (a sun is rising), while Quentyn dies (a sun has set).)

It seems to me that Quentyn's death spells the end of any alliance between House Martell and Daenerys. Most likely Doran will ally himself with Connington and Aegon, the Prince's nephew. A most interesting development, no doubt.

Really thought out observation.

I can see that...

Can they revive the secret marriage contract? That'd be even more reason for them to ally with Bonnie Prince Aegon.

That would be a reference to UnGregor, blowing in the wind like a leaf. Could happen in the next book. The third part reads, "When the seas go dry"

Just to add some wild speculation after X-Ray's brilliance, the seas would go dry if Valyria were to erupt again... There was a LOT more mention of Valyria in aDwD, like it's starting to come into play. Or, more realistically, would frozen seas count as dry? Neither of these sound right now I'm saying them out loud, but it's nice to contribute (mainly in the hope that someone suggests something that makes WAY more sense). I'm assuming 3 dragons can't produce enough fire to dry out the seas.

Only other thought is the Dothraki Sea- were the "mountain to blow" before she flies West, could she conceive in the Green Sea?

The quote from AGOT is:

"This is not life, for one who was as Drogo was...When will he be as he was?" Dany demanded.

"When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east," said Mirri Maz Duur. "When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he will return, and not before."

I don't think that's a prophecy and don't think the other things (Drogo returning "as he was") will happen. On the other hand, maybe this is a prophecy and Mirri Maz Duur mistook another Dothraki for Drogo in some vision.

Neat connection either way.

i think that was just Martin's way of saying that Dany will never have a child but he made in a way that will left us wondering until the last book is released.

i dont think its a prophecy at all.

Fuck me. I was so nervous reading that chapter that Selmy was going to die. After 2 straight POV's ending in that character's (apparent) death...

Probably not much hope of a 63 year old knight surviving the whole book series, but I really hope the old bastard makes it through a lot longer.

Still liking Barristan. He's a bit out of his depth with his duties, but he tries anyway. I hope his POV continues into the next book and that he survives the war in Mereen (I want a scene where he meets up with Tyrion, who just got the Second Sons to turn their cloaks again). Or at least gets an epic and heroic death scene where he saves someone.

Or maybe Khal Drogo is reborn as Drogon :P

Probably, but maybe some strategic timing and a lie could still save it. I noticed Selmy wanted the skin removed from Qeuntyn, so I geuss that could be to remove evidence that he was burnt. and you could send then the bones after the Battle and say he died in it.

I like barristans POV :)

Bit disappointed in general that everything ends with a cliffhanger again. We don't see cerseis trial by battle, we don't know what will happen to Jon, it's unclear what is happening with Bolton/Stannis, Briennes cliffhanger from AFFC has been resolved and replaced with a new cliffhanger within in 2 sentences and the battle at Mereen will also not happen in this book.

It's all a bit frustrating after reading a book the size of the entire lord of the rings...... It turned out to be a bit of chore to get through it tbh :(
