Would you read your books for an audiobook?

I'm not good enough at reading my own stuff yet. But hopefully I'll take a crack at it someday....

It's great to see writers on this forum.

In reading both books, there are parts where Kvothe tends to skip over and summarize certain major events in his life. Without spoiling anything, how much should we trust his narration of his story?

Pat,
You are a masterful storyteller. Your books are beautifully written.
I was wondering how your success as an author has impacted you and your lovely girlfriend in your daily lives?

We don't have to worry about money as much, which is nice. But I'm busy all the time, and my mood isn't as easygoing and happy as it used to be, since I'm under way more stress.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Q&A.  In fact, thanks for writing this story and being wonderful.

Will you tell us where Severen is located on your map?

It's north of Renere. South of Tinue.

Did your extensive college experience help you create the university we know and love from your books?

Yes. But probably not in the way you're thinking....

Hello, Father of Oot,

While writing the novels, have you ever wanted to just give it all up for some other profession? If so, what profession did you ponder, and what kept you writing?

Also, thank you for the infectious story. I've passed the Pat bug on to just about everyone I know. ;]

If I couldn't make a living as a writer any more, I'd go back to being a teacher. I love to teach....

Thanks for doing this!

About a year ago, a friend said she'd buy me a stack of books if I read them in her requested order.  Fair enough!  She sends me NotW and the 4 (at the time) existing SoI&F books, instructing me to read yours first.  I jumped in having never heard anything of you or your book, didn't even read the back.

Roughly a third of the way into NotW, I said to myself, "This was clearly written by a gen-Xer computer geek hippy-type who probably went to Hampshire or Evergreen or something."  After I finished the book I googled you & first hit, there you are in a Joss tshirt.

How could I tell?

(Note: not a trick question.)

What the hell is Hampshire or Evergreen?

Moo, hey there!

I really hope you answer this one, as it's been going through my head quite more than a little.

After finishing The Wise Mans Fear, (beyond sadness that I'd now have to wait years for another book) I felt a sense of anxiousness.

There is a LOT for Kvothe to do before the series ends. He has to kill a king, get thrown out of university, (possibly) find the Chandarian and start a war.

Does it ever concern you that you have to fit all that into one book?

Thanks!

Sorry, the following is a spoiler and I'm not sure how to hide it.
Spoiler

It's kinda like how Kirk was officially reprimanded (did I spell that right?) for cheating, and then got promoted to Captain of the Enterprise. It's like Bones said, you don't keep your prized race-horse in the stable.

I have a hard time pronouncing your names sometimes, and friends who I speak with about the books seem to have different pronounciations for names than I do, is it possible to get a phonetic pronuciation of your names in a blog?

It's one of the many blogs I've been meaning to write up. But there's only so many hours in the day, unfortunately....

I can't even begin to describe how happy this makes me.

I saw you reading someone else's book on your blog and thought then that you'd do it fantastically.

I can post? I can post!

As a map-geek myself, I was mildly disappointed that WMF didn't include a more detailed map. Is there a chance you might tell us where the inn is located (or is that a spoiler somehow)?

Hi Pat!!! greets from South America, Chile!

My question:

is there any southamerican author that you can say is a literary influence to you like Borges, Cortázar, Neruda or Parra? have you ever read some work of that authors? and im not talking strictly of medieval fantasy, im talking about fantasy like Borges (metaphysical fantasy)...

and, i know, is a second question, but is very important to a lot of people: any chances of seeing you in this lands, in Chile in particular?

my english is worst than worst sorry :(

Do you have like other novels in the works and just juggle your time between writing them?

Nah. I'm focusing on the Kingkiller books right now. With the exception of a few smaller side projects.....

Hey Pat!

You posted some of your influences / favorites in SF/F fiction; are there some non-fiction or science books that were influential to your trilogy?

If it's true that you come to Austria, we'll probably meet there ;) (I'm actually from Hungary, but I'll travel for you. ;) )

So the Four Corners of civilization aren't just the one landmass we see in the maps, right? Are there other continents, and will we see them referred to?

Nope. The four corners are: Tarbean, Renere, Ralien, and Cershaen.

Hey Pat,

I was wondering if the character of Dedan was (perhaps subconsciously) inspired by Jayne Cobb from Firefly.

That's a fair guess, but I actually wrote Dedan WAAAY back in 1998. Ages before firefly.

I will admit though, when I was reading through and making my revisions these last couple years, the resemblance made me laugh a couple times....

Hello Pat, I have a lot of questions but i don't want to be annoying so I'll ask the most important:

How is Oot today?

PS: Also, do you have any idea of which would be the release's date of TWMF traduction in spanish? (To Latin Amercia, I'm from Argentina).
PSS: We (me and a friend) have this new religion that we call Rothfusstism, it's just to let you know that we love you.

I'm hoping he's doing Okay. I was writing late last night, so by the time I woke up today, he and sarah had left. I haven't seen him yet today....

I'm not sure when it will make it down to Argentina, but I know the Spanish translation is going to be published in Spain in November....

Pat,

I imagine (now that you're a famous author) you might have a problem with being recognized/harassed while you go about your daily business.  Is this a problem for you or not something your really have to deal with?

Yeah. Sometimes it happens.

Most of the time it's nice. It's flattering having someone recognize you. And most of the time my fans are very polite and well-behaved.

But sometimes people come up and start complaining about something in the books, or bitching that they aren't coming out as quickly as they'd like. That shit's just rude. It's not like I walk up to you while you're eating at Pizza Hut and tell you how to do your job.
