I'm about half way through ACOK an i'm wondering what does break there fast mean? does it simply mean eating out of hunger or something along those lines.
Simple maybe dumb question

A fast is when you go without eating. I'm sure you've heard of Jews or Christians fasting, or right now with the Muslim holiday Ramadan (spelling?), Muslims are fasting every day from sun up to sun down.
So in the mornings, when they eat their first meal, they are breaking their fast. It is where the term "breakfast" originated from.

Breakfast. GRRM is just using the term "they broke their fast on...." such and such by using an archaic form of the word, to futher immerse you in the story, which has a medieval like historical setting. So yeah, what the above posters said. It's just people eating breakfast, the morning meal.

Fasting means they do not eat, so when they sleep they are fasting and when they awake the break their fast by having "Breakfast". Simples.
