If the chap on the cover turns out to be a different guy with nine fingers, then Joe is officially the biggest troll in fantasy fiction. Unlikely though.

I wish the covers would be more in line with the US Paperbacks they did for the trilogy. Not that those covers were great, but I've never liked my book covers to look at all 'live-action.'

Here's hoping for some great Logen/Cosca interaction. I don't think those two ever ended up in the same room throughout TFL?

So the book does take place in Styria. I don't know where the Old Empire setting idea came from

If Lamb == Logen, then we should probably hear about his nine fingers relatively early on.

UK cover art and a new synopsis:

Quote

They burned her home.
They stole her brother and sister.
But vengeance is following.

Shy South hoped to bury her bloody past and ride away smiling, but she’ll have to sharpen up some bad old ways to get her family back, and she’s not a woman to flinch from what needs doing.  She sets off in pursuit with only a pair of oxen and her cowardly old stepfather Lamb for company.  But it turns out Lamb’s buried a bloody past of his own, and out in the lawless Far Country, the past never stays buried.

Their journey will take them across the barren plains to a frontier town gripped by gold fever, through feud, duel and massacre, high into the unmapped mountains to a reckoning with the Ghosts.  Even worse, it will force them into alliance with Nicomo Cosca, infamous soldier of fortune, and his feckless lawyer Temple, two men no one should ever have to trust…

That's not just a quality fantasy novel cover, that's a quality cover period, regardless of genre.

I enjoy Abercrombie, but his names leave something to be desired. Shy South? Really?

I think shy may be an adjective, rather than part of the name.

Normally wouldn't advertise for a mafia game in the Literature forum, but.....

I'm running our next big mafia game, and it will be set in the First Law world.

For those who don't know, mafia is a logic / murder mystery game.  In a basic setup, there are 2 teams - the innocents and the killers.  The innocents try to figure out who the killers are, through a variety of tactics (catch people in contradictions, look for people who aren't willing to commit to a position, general gut feeling, etc.).  The killers try to get rid of the innocents (by removing one from the game every night) and survive until the end of the game.

Its a lot of fun.  And this upcoming game has the added bonus of the First Law theme.

Send me a PM if you're interested in playing.
