Milgod morghulis,

The guy that they cast as Roose, if I knew nothing about the casting of GoT and someone handed me his picture and asked me to tell them who he was cast as in GoT, I would say Roose Bolton without hesitation.  If someone handed me Ian McShane's picture Roose Bolton would be towards the end of the list of characters I'd guess.
I like the guy they cast as Roose, don’t get me wrong. I guess we just have different images of McShane. I see him as having the power without having to shout about it. I also see his skin the same, he looks like he has had the life sucked out of him to me. He was great in ‘Pillars of the Earth’ in that sneaky bastard type role.

As long as he isn’t the Red Viper I don’t mind. In no way is he the Viper to me.

I am leaning towards a Greyjoy, but I will take him in any role as long as he is in the show...

Donal Noye? Gruff and dark and important enough to have screentime but not multiple seasons worth.

Howland Reed (as seen in flashbacks?)

Qhorin Halfhand if still uncast.

I could see him as Halfhand. He would have been a good Janos Slynt too, but I assume they will use the guy that briefly appeared in season 1. I could see him making a good TIckler, but that role is pretty minor and would require appearances in multiple seasons.

I don't see him as the Tickler, and Janos Slynt was named.  They even showed him being named Lord of Harrenhal, so he's definitely out.  I think he would make a great Halfhand.

Yeah I know. I was just saying I COULD see him playing the part. But non-readers have no idea who Slynt is, so if he was recast, I doubt people would notice anyway.

Some don't know who he is, I'm sure, but many do.  He was in a scene with the King's small council asking for more men (where he was named I believe), then he was in a scene where he told Ned that he was on his side, then he was in the scene in the throne room where he and Cercei exchanged a look and he gave the order to kill Ned's men, then he was in the scene where he was being rewarded with the Harrenhal, and was named Janos Slynt Lord of Harrenhal.

For people that are paying attention, all of that is enough for their character to stick.  Not saying it's impossible to recast him, I'm just saying that there would definitely be a non-trivial number of non-book readers that would notice.

He said to Ned "the gold cloaks are yours" if I remember correctly. From the show, he seemed more as the leader of the gold cloaks, rather than an identifiable character. But then again, his character doesn't pick up steam until CoK anyways.

I'm not suggesting a recast, I'm simply saying I believe non-readers would not even notice. My friends had no idea he was rewarded Harrenhal because the scene focused more on Sansa's plea. I think the show would have done better by having 2 characters talk about how he was rewarded Harrenhal, then talk about its stories with Aegon's conquering and then how it is haunted.

BUT back to Ian McShane.

Has Davos been cast? McShane would be okay in that role.  One problem you have with him is that he always sounds the same, since Davos is a sailor this could be explained away.  Otherwise you are going to e wondering why does everyone have an english accent but this one guy-like what happened in "The Pillars of Earth".

Davos has been cast. But McShane is too badass to be Davos anyway. Davos is a humble man.

EDIT: I'll be putting the most suggested characters on the original post.

Has Kevan Lannister been cast? His character continues until ADWD. I don't know if Victorion has been cast. I should make a spreadsheet so that I will know which characters have been cast. I just love Ian McShane. He is near 70, yet he looks so younger.

He'd have made a great Vargo Hoat.  Grey him up a bit and Qyburn?  He's also make a great Blackfish.  Though after ADWD I'd love to see him as Wyman Manderly.

All the people I can see him playing:
Roose Bolton (not happening)
Any Greyjoy
Doran Martell
He'd be a good Varys
Mance Rayder
Thoros
Qyburn
The kindly man
Wyman Manderly

Ian McShane would be great in just about any role on Game of Thrones, but personally I hope he isn't cast for anything because I'd much rather see him play the role of the Governor on AMC's The Walking Dead - he'd be perfect for that!

Kevan Lannister? are you serious? First, he was cast and had a few lines in S1. Second, I can't see McShane playing a Lannister, a blonde wig would look ridiculous ;).

I would love to see him as Damphair or Victarion. The Kindly Man would also be an intriguing role.

He's not gaunt and I think all Greyjoys are slim. And Euron looks way younger than he is, he should look 10-15 years younger than Aeron and Victarion.

I'd like to see him as Randyll Tarly or Mace Tyrell.

Mance Rayder would work too, Ian McShane has a great mischievous smile.
