Could that be the eastern coast of Asshai and Essos?
That was my thought, similar to Russia/Alaska.

The Russia/Alaska connection is what the Stepstones is; there used to be a bridge, but now it's gone.

I was going to say that, that In GOT a tale is told of Brandon the Shipwright, who took his Father's ships and was lost in the Sunset seas.  Brandon the Burner burned the rest to prevent further such follies.   What's out there?  I hope GRMM finishes this wonderful series before burdening himself with writing another.

Feels a bit like Artur Hawkwing's descendants from WoT. I don't remember, the Seanchan?

In citing her foreign policy credentials to be Queen, Cersei said she see Asshai from Casterly Rock.

A glass wall. I still say they're all in an elaborate terrarium owned by Wo & Shade.

Westerwesteros.

edit- Apparently I am late to the stupid name party.

Did Martin really say that Essos is as big as Eurasia o.O?  Thats huge.  It certainly doesn't "feel" that big from what we've seen.

It certainly doesn't seem that large. It might be that Essos is one of those places thats only populated heavily around the coast. The central regions could all be mountains, desert, or some other largely uninhabitable terrain with just small scattered settlements. All the big cities are near the water to gain access to sea trade. I hope we get to see an entire world map before its over.

The thought of Victarion sailing across the Sunset Sea with a dragon to ruin Euron's day makes me giddy.

Logic says beyond the Sunset Sea lies the eastern most corner of Essos.

There might as well be a brand new continent lying in between, inhabited by Horthers (not Hodor mind you)...descendants of the Great Other and the Harpy.

I allways believed that Asshai can be reached by ship from western Westeros. In the first Jon chapter of ASOS, Mance Rayder recounts how his cloak was patched by a wildling woman with "silk from Asshai pulled from the wreck of a cog washed up on the Frozen shore". Now the frozen shore is on the north-western coast of Westeros. After reading this passage, I believed that there must be a sea trade route from Asshai to the west of Westeros. Else, what would the cog be doing in that region?
Maybe Martin meant for it to be a trade route but then retconned it?

Aside from the screenshot of the scrapped original opening sequence for the TV series, we have no idea. (edit: And if you take a good look at that picture, you'll see that the coastline of this "western continent" is actually just copy-pasted from various parts of Westeros, so it was probably never meant to be serious.) And actually, we don't even know how most of Essos looks like, I suspect that what we've seen from it so far (Free Cities, Valyria, Slavers Bay, Qarth) is just a relatively small part of it., roughly equivalent to our world's Middle East.

Imagine there was a see between Ukraine and the Ural mountains, and that there was no Africa south of Europe. Westeros is Europe, obviously. Free Cities would be located on the coast of Turkey, the Levant, and Arabia. The Slavers Bay is roughly where the Arabian Sea/Persian Gulf is, so Meereen is somewhere in Iran or Pakistan. Africa has moved east-south and its northern coastline nearly touches the southern tip of India - that's where Qarth is. Beyond lies the Jade Sea and the fabulous eastern lands - Asshai (China? Japan?), Yi Ti (Indonesia? Thailand?) and others.

If there is another large continent - the ASOIAF equivalent of the Americas - I *VERY MUCH* doubt we'll hear about it. Nobody has ever mentioned with any authority that the people of Westeros/Essos know about any continent-sized mass in the Sunset sea. They may have legends, but medieval Europe had plenty of these too, and they were all wrong. Unless Martin wants to shamelessly copy the Viking discovery of Vinland in his books, it's not relevant. He hasn't even finished flashing out the world we already know, so it would be pretty dumb to introduce a new, completely different continent (and spend some 5 books travelling through it  ). At best, Bran will glimpse it in his tree-trance ;)

Ha, interesting. Either the ship got lost at sea and the ocean currents carried it all the way from Asshai to Westeros, or it was a Westerosi ship trading with the North (which carried some Eastern merchandise, it's possible).
