Who Should Play Wyman Manderly?

Interesting...

Hugo from Lost comes to mind size wise, but he would obviously be better suited for one of Manderly's sons due to his age.

I love The Wire so Landsman is also a good suggestion.

What about James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano)? He has the HBO connection and if he added a little weight for the role he might work.

The dude who plays Jay Landsman on The Wire.

Everyone always tells me to start watching The Wire, but I haven't seen it yet (I know, blasphemy). So I googled Landsman, and he looks perfect for the role... good call... so long as he can pull off an English accent. His name is Delaney Williams, by the way.

Well, Ian McNeice had to drop out of playing Illyrion, so he could play Wyman Manderly.

Can't believe I forgot McNeice. I loved Rome, and even though his part was small (i.e. town crier), he was pretty memorable, just based on looks alone. Great call on that one. He comes with a built-in English accent as well.

Anyone got any ideas for Wyman Manderly? I can't think of anyone fat enough to play him. Gerard Depardieu is the only guy who comes to mind, and I doubt he could pull off a Geordie accent.

Richard Griffiths has the gravitas to play Wyman Manderly. Heck, he has the gravity to play him. Plus, he's British Equity. He's Uncle Vernon from the Harry Potter series.

Any of these guys would be better than Gerard Depardieu. He'd probably just end up getting shitfaced and piss everywhere anyway.

Val Kilmer is probably fat enough to play Wyman nowadays. Although, he'd probably ask for a fortune, to be paid in sweet pastries. We're talkin' jelly doughnuts, baklavas, sweet cheese strudels, etc... And that shit adds up. HBO isn't made out of money (or sweet, delectable, candied treats for that matter).

I would like to see Landsman, he fits my mental image of Wyman Manderly, Landsman might not be as fat as Wyman, but they made Illyrio alot slimmer as well

Griffifths was first choice to play Illyrio, IIRC, but was unavailable, so it would be an interesting choice.

However, for me there is only one choice, even if he is not quite as rotund as he once was. It begins with 'Brian' and ends with 'Blessed'.

I Claudius and Blackadder are two of my favorite British TV shows of all time, so good call on that one. But I was thinking he might be a little too old, nowadays. Isn't he in his 80s? Granted, Manderly is no spring chicken, but I don't picture him being quite that old. Maybe more like the 50s-60s range. I suppose they could probably make him look younger on film, but the camera usually works the other way.

He's also a bit more intimidating than I picture Manderly. McNeice has more of a genteel look, whereas Blessed has more of the Grizzly Adams look going on, IMO.

Nonetheless, I'd be stoked if they got him for any role on GoT. He'd be great.

I think that it would be fun if George Martin was able to have a cameo as Wyman Manderlay. It seems like he wrote the character with himself in mind. :)

You almost read my mind with that...

I was thinking a while back of what I would ask Martin if I ever interviewed him, and I thought of "If you were still in your prime and available for acting, which character do you think you would play?" I tried to think based off of earlier photos of him, but I couldn't much figure it out. Of course him playing Wyman would be in the present, but I think it could actually work.

I think if he mustered up his chops and took a "King Osric" (Max von Sydow from Conan) approach, he could pull it off. He does have a more substantial role than other side characters, I feel that Martin would be able to captivate people for long enough. I suppose the real issue is the cracking voice he has, which I think gives him character, but studio heads would think is distracting.

Most likely though, there are others better for the part, and our wanting to see Martin should not eclipse people who have a knack for a role (like me! >>).
