In my opinion, Ned is one of the best people in the story. He was certainly a man of his times and his society, and he wasn't without his flaws. I think he catches a lot of undue flak for being "foolish" or inflexible during his time in King's Landing. He could've done things differently, yes, but ultimately he stayed true to his character and brought a lot of grief on himself and his family in the process.

Thousands of pages after he died, we're still trying to figure out exactly what he promised his sister and which necessary lies haunted him in his final hours.

Jaime wasn't half the man, the Lord, Ned Stark was. I don't think that from the TV we can say that Ned was a good swordsman, nor Jaime either. We just watched them matching each others.
So, I was expecting this thread, actually. Ned deserve some recognition, some homage, not just "he's fucking stupid, lame player, honourable fool" reaction. He's more than that

Jaime was considered the greatest swordsmen in westeros. Ned wasn't anything special. Having them matching eachother was lame and not realistic.

Many great swordsmen came and fell and no one is the best ( there is always a bigger fish )
He lost 1 hand without it he is nothing
He never had honour or respect, he was never a proper knight
The only thing he had was his skils with sword and now lol he is nothing but a cripple dihonoured
kingslayer

Well, I'm not denying that Jaime was a great swordsman. But we all know how that one attribute defined him, and what a wreck he was deprived of his swordhand.

Ned was also a wreck when you deprived him of his head.

We don't really have a lot of specific information on Ned's skill with a sword. We have the one sparring match you mentioned, and we have his own assessment that Brandon was a better swordsman. Other than that, I don't think we can make an accurate assessment of how skilled he was.

no because the fight never ended fairly
so no result means it could have gone either way
the chances are 50 - 50

If Tyrion can kill Tywin
if Bastard Jon snow can  become Lord commander
If Varys can grow a pair and killed kevan Lannister
If Red Viper can take down the mountain
If Samwell Tarly can slay a white walker

thn Ned Stark beating Jamie doesnt seem that hard

I don't understand all The Lord Stark hate. It's better to die with honor than to live without it. It took me three reads to realize that the only reason that Lord
Stark didn't detain the lannister bastards was because he promised King Robert on his deathbed that he would protect his kids.

He honored a dying man's promise despite the fact that he knew that the brats were concieved by twincest. And regarding the tv fight between Lord Stark and the Kingslayer.....I'm not bothered at all. I've seen many fights where the stronger fighter either loses or is fought to a draw because of many reasons such as overconfidence and the fury of their opponent.  Jaime wasn't invincible....I think that the Hhound, Ser Garland, The Halfhand, and the Mance probably could have all given him a good fight.

A man dies but the name remains
Ned stark will always be remembered in a positive way in the story and for the fans
Jamie on the other hand never had a honour and if he dies without getting his honour and respect back
he will be remembered as a kingslayer oh wait even by getting his honour and respect back he will
always be rememebered as a kingslayer and a oath breaker and he has to die with it.

We know that no one has ever mentioned him as a great warrior. Whereas Jaime is often cited as a great warrior. Jaime personally killed several prominent lords in battle. Jaime was a much greater fighter than ned. Its to bad people are too fanboy to acknowledge it.
