Brienne of Tarth - You don't deserve ANY of the crap that people have given you for your looks over the years. Your a strong warrior who could snap the necks of any of those willowy pretty maidens, and their brothers to boot. So you just need to tell them all to stick it where the sun don't shine!

Catelyn Tully - Your children are either dead or in hiding and your a rotting corpse fueled by magic, hate, and not much else. You used to be such a glorious person, a real Lady in a world filled with whores and scheming bitches who dared to lay claim to the same status.

Cersei Lannister - Your what I like to call a "Hot Mess", your a psycho bitch who has lived in fear over the mutterings of a fortune teller, your parenting skills created Joffrey the Monster, your husband Robert abused you as much as you abused him, the only man who loved you (Jamie) now hates you, and your own family left you to do a (literal) walk of shame alone. But you still need to die, but I can't help but feel a little sorry for you.

Eddard Stark - *Sigh*, You really should have stayed in the North Ned, you were out of your depth in Kings Landing.

Gilly - Considering that your father sexually abused you, forced you to bear him a child, and would probably have sacrificed said child to the Others to save his own worthless hide, your perseverence and strength are remarkable. Even though Jon Snow is using your actual son as a decoy right now, I think that you'll find a way to survive, maybe even thrive now that you've gone south for the winter.

Lysa Tully - You poor, poor, thing, all your life you just wanted to be loved and no one ever really did.

Merrett Frey - Where do I start with you? Your pathetic fighting skills, your lack of wit, your drinking, your terrible parenting, walking into an OBVIOUS trap, even when you had a rope around your neck you thought you could worm your way out of it.

Myrcella Baratheon - You lost your beauty and an ear and your not even ten yet. And if her mother continues on her merry way you'll wind up crowned and dead just like your brothers.

Penny - Of all the characters out of ASOIAF, Penny is the one that I'd like to be able to rip out of the pages and just give her a hug.

Robert Arryn - Poor Sweetrobin, Epileptic, Stunted, raised by an increasingly insane mother, now in the not-so loving hands of Littlefinger who is slowly poisoning you to death.

Samwell Tarly - Oye! I found you annoying at first, a human knockoff of Samwise Gamgee, but you've grown on me but your still kinda pathetic.

Sansa Stark - Your charming innocence has landed you in hot water over and over again, and now Littlefinger is letching all over you while teaching you all the tricks of the Game of Thrones, I hope you don't turn into a Cersei II.

Shireen Baratheon - So many people see your greyscale scarred face and where some see ugliness, others see the taint of illness and treat you like a lepper. No wonder you dream nightmares of dragons eating you and find Patchface funny.

Theon Greyjoy - It's impressive what a stay at the Dreadfort will do to a man, it turned you from a monster into something so pathetic that even your enemies would feel bad for you... and that's even without knowning the fate of your penis.

Tommen Baratheon - Between Joffrey and Cersei I'm shocked that your still a sweet innocent boy, but your not going to survive whats coming. :(

Fat Walda Frey - Everyone at the Twins mocked you for your weight, you were married to Roose Bolton just for the silver, and now he hopes that the children you bear him are killed by his bastard just to ensure that an adult inherits the Dreadfort.

I don't feel sad for Catelyn Tully (Stark). She sorta brought this all on herself. I'm surprised you don't feel bad for Robb Stark. And I guess it was really late and I was falling a sleep, but how did I miss the part about Theon's penis? What exactly happened? Is he a eunich now or something?

Definitely Podrick. How about Septa Mordane? And any silent sister that gets rape. I feel bad for them.

Tyrion.  Rejected by his father his whole life.  Emotionally tortured by him with his brother's support.  Saved KL and was completely ignored in favor of his father as the hero.  Kidnapped, kept in a sky cell, lost the majority of his nose, wrongly accused of Regicide, kept in a black cell, abandoned by his only friend and the woman he loved, sold into slavery, may have latent greyscale.

By the way, what real disease or malady is "greyscale" supposed to represent?  I tried to find something similar on the Internet, but there's too much medical jargon.

edmure tully, he is a good lord who cares about his people, is forced to marry a girl he doesn't want to by his nephew (because his nephew wanted to break a marriage contract), sacrificed his own reputation in order to save his smallfolk, and is now going to spend the rest of his life as a prisoner. Plus it seems like his father and uncle viewed him as a disappointment

also pia, being repeatedly raped can't be that much fun.

All I could think of while reading ADwD was how much the universe hated Quentyn. That dude just could not catch a break. In a way, I felt some weird connection because we've all had those periods in our lives where we feel like we're constantly getting shit on at every turn, and all we have are the best of intentions. He spent his entire life aspiring to be bigger than he was. And, the saddest part of all was that he'd have been happiest living a substantially simpler existence. That poor schmuck.

Viserys Targaryen - His entire family died before he was 10 years-old, sent into exile with an infant sister, guardian dies when they're both still children and he's left with no money, no support and no friends to beg his way across the Free Cities while everyone laughs at him and calls him "The Beggar King" because he was forced to sell his mother's last possessions.

I actually felt bad for Joffrey during that scene in AGOT where Robert is acting all drunk and stupid at the feast.  Of course, he immediately kills off all good feeling by sending the girl that is gaga over him back home in the company of his alcoholic, pissed off bodyguard whom he knows she is afraid of.  But, for about thirty seconds, I really did feel sorry for him.

For a slightly different approach I would suggest Gared of the night watch from the prologue of AGOT. Driven mad by what he had seen beyond the wall and beheaded as an deserter. I just feel sorry for this grizzled old veteran who has to listen to and do what this young pup says, who btw has no great experience of ranging.. He did desert yes, so his excecution was justified, but it still felt wrong somehow. To me he doesnt seem to be the kind of guy who would desert under normal circumstances, but seeing what he had been through anyone could break.

Edit: Also Cressen, despite (or because of?) his attempted murder of Mel. Cant help but feel pity for the man, ridiculed and put aside by Stannis/his court, he deserved a better ending imo. Loyal, in his own way, to Stannis to the end. I am a Stannis fan but I didnt like how harshly he treated Cressen, even though he did also defend him from Selyse(?).

Edit2: The Lace Serpent, wife to Lord Denys of Duskendale, who after the Defiance of Duskendale "...was burned alive, poor woman, though her tongue was torn out first, and her female parts...Half of Duskendale will still tell you that Aerys was too kind to her" AFFC paperback p 191. Thats just too cruel to imagine, and unnescesary. Just cut her throat and be done with it, atleast thats a quick death. But then again Aerys wasnt the most forgiving, or gentle, of kings..

Not to mention he was killed while his sister, the only woman he truly loved, just stared on without pity. The guy was an asshole, but all he wanted to do was restore his family's honor and make a good life for him and his sister, and it got him crowned.

Agreed. But you don't see many other people say it, a practice that is unreasonably not extended to Stannis. Both Viserys and Renly had to die to nullify the threat to Dany and Stannis respectively.

I feel sorry for Viserys because he had to shoulder a lot of responsibility and had to endure the mockery of nearly everyone he encounters. At least the only life Dany knows is the one wrought with fear, paranoia and hardship - she only has a vague memory about a better time while Viserys has to contend with a massive drop in the quality of life.

I definitely feel sorry for Podrick Payne - the poor kid just wants to squire!

He and Brienne reminded me off Dunk and Egg which made it hard for me to read Brienne's last POV in AFFC.

I feel sorry for a lot of people but for the sake of this thread, I'll name Lysa Tully.  Ruthlessly used and discarded by the men around.  Lived one hell of a miserable life.  Could barely have one living and sickly child.  Murdered by the man she was in love with, after she caught him molesting her niece because her niece resembles her sister.

Lysa isn't a good person, but I feel a lot of pity for her.

Jeyne Poole. What a horrible life for a child.... passing from Cersei's hands to Littlefinger's and finally marrying the psycho of Ramsay?

Tysha's orchestrated gang rape by Tywin.

Jon Connington. I really like this homo, he's been protecting and training the son of his gay-daydream princeling for ages, living in exile, and just when they are ready to make their victorious return to Westeros, the poor fellow has got himself the greyscale. He sounds such a good and straight( :-) )-up guy, competent general, all-in-all a perfect mentor for Aegon, and then he is destined to die a gruesome death.

Well, at least he got to live long enough to get his home castle back and maybe even some greater things still to come.

Catelyn Stark
- losing her beloved husband (though Eddard stupidly engineered his own downfall and endagered his daughters because of that stubborn, rigid pride that he calls honour ). Then she had to repeatedly relive every the very worst nightmares of every parent: the deaths of her children, a missing child and another child trapped as a hostage to a family that pretty much takes the price for ruthlessness and cruelty.
